Oil change at a dealership, how much should it cost?

I do my own oil changes so I have no idea what it cost these days. As far as repairs go I have not had many over the last 20 years and all were under warranty.

A old couple of European descent came in to pick up their car while I was at the dealership. They had an oil change with an air filter change and the cabin air filter changes. How much should it have cost?
I was surprised at what they were charged.

Not to bias the answer I will post what they were charged and the dealer brand later.

It's about $70 bucks nowadays at my Toyota dealership. That's synthetic oil, every six months.

I just got an oil change at the local garage: 9 litres synthetic at 14 each, 11 for filter, plus 20 labour. Upside is its only once every 16k.
A cabin filter is anywhere from 10 to 50 and 15 minutes to an hour to change.

A corolla is $53 but its 10-30 regular. You can get a synthetic oil change at Costco for $45.

Took my truck in for it's first oil change back in 2011 . It cost me $160 for a filter and 12 liters of 15 W 40 oil . The first and last time for that . Can buy a good quality oil for ( 18 liters ) now for around $60 . I get my Cummins filters from the US for about $11 US . Filters are made for the Cummins engine and are top quality and good price .

I also have a grease nipple on the drive shaft for the 4 wheel drive . I asked the service guy if he greased that nipple . He said yes . The guy lied because you have to turn the driveshaft to find the nipple . Truck was on a 4 wheel lift . I watched . He didn't grease anything . If I trusted these guys than I would have ended up spending big money to replace that universal joint by now .

Hate to think what they charge now for an oil change for my truck . I do my own oil changes and save money . I can spend that money some place else . I have 3 vehicles so changing my own oil saves me a bundle of money.

I cut the bottom part of a plastic 55 gal drum to catch the oil . I have no mess when changing my oil .

The service department was a Lexus/Toyota dealership. The price was $360 for oil/filter change. engine air filter and cabin air filter change. I do not know if that was tax included.

They appeared to be retired working class, so my guess is that they drove a Toyota.

If it's a Toyota, that's about twice what I'd expect them to pay. You sure it was just a basic oil/filter change? Or was it one of the more involved service packages?

I took my wife's Corolla to my local guy for an oil & filter, cabin filter, engine air filter and 2 licence plate bulbs. Parts, labour and tax $95.49. Screw the dealer for stuff like that. I could easily do it myself, but it's not worth it for that price.

Japanese car, $70. German luxury car, $250.
I have owned both, but there is difference.

German car, service once a year on average.

Japanse car, service 3 to 4 times a year.

Annual cost is pretty much the same.

I dumped the Japanese Car, I still have the German Car.

When I got the Japanese car serviced I would either wait at the dealership or have them drive me home. German car, I get a free loaner for the day, just pay for the gas.

German car drives 10 times better than the Japanese car.

The service manager rattles off what was done to their car and at the end mentioned the price, that is the extent of what I heard. I can not tell you if it is a deluxe service package, but I do believe it is just simple servicing. Dealerships have to charge big to pay the bills.

Not shocking, someones gotta pay for the dealership.

Oil and filter at my local honda dealership is 70, but they try to get you for a 250 service which doesnt include anything more but people fall for it 9 out of 10.times

I guess they give people the check and inspection spiel to make them believe they are safer if they take the deluxe service package.

Its painful to watch people get ripped off like that at the dealership.

I take my cars to dealerships since for 70 bucks I get oem filter, synthetic oil and change. Hard to justify doing it yourself when good synthetic oil is 40-50 plus oem filter another 15-20.

Everything else I do myself, anyways last oil change they hand me a estimate for almost $2,500, I shit you not it was front brakes, filters, and plugs. I laughed, ordeted the brake pads and did the work myself one Saturday. Total cost $86 for front pads lol
The filters were almost new and didn't need to be changed, if the did they are 20 bucks on amazon, 30 at canadian tire.
Plugs are good to 160k, once again dealership is full of shit.
When it's time the cost is 18 $ each and 20 minutes of work.

Well as far as I'm concerned I try and stay away from any dealerships . Had a problem with my truck . Dealership charged me $130 to see what the check engine light was all about . They quoted me $1300 to fix the problem . My buddy said take it to his guy . I did . He put it on the hand held checker to see what it said . He gave me a can of fuel cleaner and conditioner told me to fill it with fresh fuel and take it for a nice run. I did and the light went out . Never to return , Cost me $20 and no charge for checking the light like the dealer . Funny how a $1300 job turned into a $20 job .

Dealers have to pay all of the people working there . Also they have to pay for the fancy building . Their costs are high so your costs to get something done is high .

I picked up 4 jugs of synthetic oil at CDN Tire for less than $25 each on their Black Friday special. I also picked up 4 oil filters at 25% of on one of their weekly specials. If you have a CDN Tire account you can put items on alert and buy them when they are discounted. Walmart also often have half price synthetic oil, that is just about the only thing I would go there for.
