Wondering if anyone in the TERB community has been to Singapore, and can recommend a good quality, reasonably priced hotel that is close to tourist attractions?
I will be visiting for a few days in the new year--but not for hobbying!
Any recommendations/tips would be greatly appreciated!

I have never been to Singapore, but is not Raffles where people of our standing are supposed to stay?

Parc Sovereign Hotel is a decent spot. It’s very reasonable by Singapore standards. It’s very near the Little India MRT station so you’ll need to take the train anywhere, though there are a ton of great restaurants in the area.

The MRT is excellent, don’t be put off by the location.

Why would you ever go that place? If they catch with you any drug, they will execute you. Does not matter if you had surgery and have a prescription from your doctor for it from a foreign country.
They can even arrest you even if you are just transiting. I would just avoid any pacific flights to Asia that might accidentally land there due to emergencies. So goes for Malaysia, Indonesia.

So...don’t get involved with illegal drugs?

Singapore is a really nice place. As far as Asia goes, you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere safer.

Traveling with prescription drugs shouldn’t be a problem, but plan ahead. Find out what you can and can’t carry with you.

Getting arrested while transiting or whatever sounds like a fairytale to me, though I did hear about some stoner kid getting tested at the airport, but who knows how true it is.

All of Asia is bad news for drugs. Just stay away from weed or anything harder.

You should go to cruisecritic.com or tripadvisor and enter "Singapore hotel" into the search bar. You'll get plenty of reviews from people who have stayed in Singapore for a few days before or after a cruise. I'll be there in February for only one night and am staying at the Holiday Inn Clarke Quay.

Ah Singapore the memories, the pub below Raffles (Barney's) are full of SPs from all over the world, European, south american, Chinese, Korean, etc.. there was a multi-level building on orchard rd with different night clubs, each with different "tastes", women from various ethnicities, trans, men only, lesbians, each club catered to a different clientele base. Very interesting place... oh you were asking for hotel recommendations... I have none.

Yes you go onto a website that the Singapore national health service lists which medications need to be declared, and declare what you're bringing in w a copy of your passport and the doctors prescription and you got 0 problems. They list which things, for example, alprazolam and various opiods. Then they send you a note approving your entry w those meds, and you print it out and take with you in case you're stopped. But if you're dragging in illegals...well good luck.

Yeah but that applies virtually anywhere. Smuggling drugs is a risky game.

The place on Orchard road is affectionately referred to as “four floors of whores.” The main pickup joint is a bar called Ipanema. There are a ton of “buy me a drink girl” places and they are ridiculously expensive.

Virtually every bar in Clark Quay is infested with freelancers. Every single bar. I couldn’t find a “civilian” girl anywhere touristy.

Girls from places like Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia can all travel there visa free and charge 5 to 10 times the going rate in their home countries.

It’s not a cheap place to play.

It’s also about the hottest place on the planet.

As for hotels, don’t bother with Hotel 81 or Fragrance as they are more or less dodgy sex hotels.

Preferably a room opening off the garden. I never did figure out why mine had three double beds, all in a row, but I did like the the the songbirds just outside the door.

Apparently the legal brothels are about half the price (150/hr in the geylang district, although I can't vouch for any) as the 4 floors of whores in orchard towers. Many of those ladies in orchard towers have quotas where they have to get you to but super expensive drinks (also known as "but me drink" bars , or BMD). That's why the proprietors allow them to ply their trade - they get customers to buy x number of drinks, then they can sit around and pick up clients.

I forgot to mention Geylang. I never went there but from what I read, it’s mostly PRC girls. Many speak no English and are strictly for Chinese men. The price was even lower last time I checked but my information is getting near 5 years old.

I also read there are higher rates for Ang Mo...but I never partook in Geylang so I can’t really say.

Ipanema though, the girls were asking $250 and up. Can get some of them down to $150 if she likes you and / or is desperate enough. There’s a lot of competition. I have literally never seen so many prostitutes anywhere in the world, and I’ve been to Pattaya, Hong Kong, Manila, Bali, etc. I was actually getting irritated in SG because it’s very difficult to find civilian girls there. At least it was for me.

The “BMD” girls don’t even fuck you. They just flirt heavily and drain your wallet, not your balls. I suppose it’s possible that you could get one to go home with you or meet you after work though. It’s definitely not automatic.

There are a lot of weird laws there. One I recall is that a single female isn’t allowed to buy or carry condoms, so you’ll have to make a stop at the 7/11 unless you’re otherwise prepared.

There are a lot of PRC girls...they get 2 week work permits, get health checks, and can make more $ in those 2 weeks than the rest of the year in China. Some are even married ladies. Word on the street is they wanna cycle through clients as quick as they can and get impatient. That's part of the reason I don't visit those establishments as I enjoy the conversational aspect of the lady's company.

Mongering in Asia is a completely different experience. I prefer the freelance scene as opposed to the bar girl scene because you’re not on a strict clock, and in most cases you’re able to establish a much more genuine connection and experience with your new friend.

Meet, go out, have a few drinks, watch a band play, flirt, go home and bang, give her some money the next day, or not.

I have done both. Sometimes the girl refuses any money, or they’ll take cab fare only. Some leave their purse open and unattended where you can drop a gift in there. Some are up front from the first minute.

It’s so much better than what we have here. The market here is so inflated, every minute is counted. It’s really not an affordable lifestyle with women charging $700 an hour, not to name names.

I wish we had a similar set up over here.

You could fly to the Philippines, rent a place for a month, meet several freelancers and spend less than a “high end” Toronto SP’s overnight or 24 hour rate.

It’s crazy what we pay here.
