See, this I'm not totally sold on. I'm not sure you can get much bigger than the Raptors Parade. I think the Raptors have a bigger fan base due to ethnic diversities they reach out to. Toronto is more multi-cultural now than it ever has been, and there's generations of young people that grew up on basketball as opposed to hockey.
This is lost on many.

I think Leaf fans have deeper pockets.
Any data to back that up, or is this your anecdotal opinion? Do you have annual average incomes of season ticket holders of each team? Do TV watchers of Leafs pay more for their cable?

Regardless, even if you are correct, having more money backing one team over the other is a strong indicator of which team reigns. Thanks for agreeing.

Yes hockey fans tend to be richer and whiter. The sports that dominate the globe are cheap - soccer, football, basketball - because they can be played easily during all seasons and it's affordable to all. This will solidify basketball's popularity over hockey in Toronto. However, there will be a place for hockey for many generations to come. It'll still make bank just like golf does which is overwhelmingly white, old, and expensive.

I can go down to Scotiabank Arena and get Raptor tickets at cost price on game day. While Leafs tickets I have to get from a scalper for an inflated price.

Let's compare ticket prices on Ticketmaster today, both are similar seats with an obstructed view.

Nov 6 Raptors vs Kings cheapest seat (not standing room) $57.82

Nov 5 Leafs vs Kings cheapest seat (not standing room) $77.88

This says something.

But i don't doubt basketball and soccer are gaining popularity in Canada.
Here's the thing. They use to give Raptor tickets away for free 10+ years back.

Now they are just $20 less than the Leafs. The gap ain't that wide anymore.

You can gauge it from sports talk radio, it's still about the Leafs.
Leafs are part of a bigger cultural backdrop, hockey.
Raps may have gotten more popular, but basketball doesn't touch hockey in scope.
Naw. Advertisers want a certain demographic and your typical leaf hockey fan will match the desired customer.

On the internet, Raptors have a larger social media following than the Leafs.

Media is all target markets.

Was it the same a few years back or did it spike in the last few years?

the leafs were ahead on twitter and Instagram. They started running neck and neck around 2017.

Raptors also have more Reddit followers and the RealGM forum is basically carried by Raptor fans.

But again it's all a form of media and doesn't paint the full picture. Just a part of it.

Do you think the recent fan interest in the Raptors also reflects the fan base for basketball in general?
I don't know myself, I feel like I'm losing touch with where it's at.
I see that a lot of young kids are crazy for the Raptors, but I don't get a read on how deep the love is
for basketball in general.

In basketball, the order of importance is Player>Team>League. It's a different mindset.
The correlation between individual talent and team success is very high. You'll never see a St. Louis Blue-type team in the NBA win it all.

Since Basketball is more about superstars rather than team management, you may not see many diehard basketball fans.

It's a different way of thinking and marketing.

I'm not sure I grasp that concept. As well, the title of the thread deals with the separate sports, "Is hockey still king?" So your flow chart should possibly be Sport is greater than Player is greater than team etc. Which sport is king in Toronto? The reasons are not pertinent.

Question when the Raptors starts to suck again and they have to rebuild because every sports franchise goes through it. Will the Raptors fans base still be as strong as Nav Bhatia or are most going to be just band wagon jumpers and jump off?

When I speak to hockey fans, they talk about strategies (Second/Third Lines etc). Basketball is more like a Hockey Pool, were you are focused on stats and performances. At the end of it all you are following the sport.

Thread says "Is Hockey Still King in Toronto?" the Poll says "Are the Leafs Still King?". My answer is the same, the gap is closer than many may think.

Well, right now Leafs/hockey are at 60% in the poll. Jays and Raps combined are at 28% which means it's not even close. So even if the gap is narrowing (and some of that is clearly due to last years Raps win and could decrease if the team's fortunes falter going forward) it still means that Leafs/hockey is clearly still the current king.

But Terb is a small sample size. And even then, it was closer for a while until the hockey cavalry came in.

I've already said my piece in previous posts. The growth potential is huge. So for me, It's interesting to see where this goes 5-10 years from now.

They were actually talking about this on the radio the other day, (fan 590) and I guess their ratings and everything else still tells them it's a hockey city, because they said it's not even close which blew me away.

Sportsnet is apologizing for him again this morning.
I wonder if this will finally be the last straw?
We need fewer intrusions into our lives by very angry old men who can't see a world beyond the end of their nose.
He's toxic.

Still has a huge following, and CC still has great ratings. Doubt he's going anywhere.

If not already, he is very close to being too much of an embarrassment. Some of the ratings are due to people being interested in watching a train wreck, that is what moronic thing will he say today. Not exactly the kind of ratings Rogers is interested in. At some point there will be repercussions.
