Actually my first music idols were probably Michael Jackson and Duran Duran (no joke). Then I got into hip hop in the mid 80's - Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Schoolly D were my go to's. I really didn't start getting into the foundation of black music until the 2000's. And I'm still listening and learning new things all the time.

I'm a musician but pretty sure you wouldn't dig what I play lol. Trying to lay a chorus right now. Not going so well so I throw on some Hendrix too free my mind from the chord structure I am trying to write. He is so different it puts my head in a different space if you dig?
