That was a pathetic display of hitting. Its going to be a long year for Jay's fans.
You're projecting an entire season's hitting based on one game's results? Mmmmmkay then.

Of course not. I tend to think they will get more than two hits a game for sure. Hitting is going to be a glaring weakness on this team and they will rank near the bottom in that category come October.

You don't recognize good pitching when you see it... but that does not mean it won't be a long year for us...

I think the way to look at this is to enjoy the game for what it is. The score does not matter. Just a bunch of boys playing baseball. And if they are well managed, good athletes, they will entertain. Maybe even surprise.

lol. And you don’t recognize lousy at bats. The Mariners beat up on Sale.....I guess that was lousy pitching by your logic.

Our hitting is definitely going to struggle for most of the year. I guess all we can hope for is Vlad Jr. gets healthy and loses some weight. I'm less concerned about our pitching (bullpen aside because its horrific). I think at some point Reid-Foley will be up to be our 5th starter after Stroman, Sanchez, Shoemaker and Buchholz. Obviously Sanchez, Shoemaker and Buchholz are all health risks.

But the real arm on the farm is Nate Pearson. He dials it up over 100 mph. He should reach AA by mid season, pending health of course.

It's going to be a long year but there are signs of encouragement. The starters look great, Trent Thornton has stuff and would have made the team by plonking Bryce Harper alone. And I'm liking Montoyoball, it's about time they manufacture runs.

Let's see what happens when Vlad Jr gets called up.

ok off to a not bad, not good start....be intersting to see if Tiger offence just bad or we were just that good. I like Charlie (Gibbons never had his team ready for early season baseball)..but I got to say that having janssen bat lead off and dh was really a bad idea. Galvis was hot could have been dh today

I liked Rowdy Tellez on that homerun, he was fooled by an offspeed pitch, had to reach for it and still hits it over the centrefield wall. You have to be very strong to pull that off

I like the kind of baseball I am seeing. I find it much more interesting and fun than the base-to-base approach of the past many, many years. It's going to take a while until they can get their game up to consistent performance, but I look forward to it... if I live long enough!

On a related subject... this past winter I finally gave in and bought 4k service for my TV. Is anybody else as impressed as I am by the difference the quality of the video makes?

I can really see the game as it happens, not on instant replay. Especially the pitching. The nuances of the body language. The framing of the strike zone really helps me understand what is going on. I can see the flight, spin, depth and break of the ball much more clearly. And what the catcher and hitter are up to. Kudos to Rogers for putting it all together well!

As I have said before, I have changed my mind about Shatkins... I like what they are doing. On and off the field. :sorry:

You know what, I dont mind trading guys to rebuild the team, but it doesnt seem like we're getting much value back in return.

Shatkins have a plan. And that's what they are executing.

Unless we know exactly what that plan is, we can't determine what's right, what's wrong.

And Shatkins must constantly be thinking about what lies ahead over the course of the next 5 to 10 years... us fans have no clue what wheels are turning there!

What I think they are doing is what more or less was said at the time they were hired. Build a base, a solid farm system, to support a perennial contender. Not a perennial winner because that is impossible these days. Even for the Yankees and the Dodgers!

That was the way Pat Gillick did his magic! Both for the BJ's and others. And what made him so successful is that he was also very good at assessing talent and putting teams together.

Of course, as with all such things, the devil is in the details.
