Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health has issued an extreme cold weather alert as temperatures are expected to plunge tonight.
Temperatures are set to take a nosedive with lows reaching -17 and feeling more like -24 with the wind chill. On Monday, the high is forecast to reach -6 but it’s expected to feel like -20.
Extreme cold weather alerts are issued when temperatures are estimated to reach -15 or colder or when the wind chill is forecast to hit -20 or colder.
680NEWS weather specialist Denise Andreacchi says temperatures will be well below the seasonal average every day this week heading into the March break.
“This time of year we should see highs of 3 degrees – not the case for the next seven days,” says Andreacchi. “The trend will be in the minus single digits and lows in the minus teens. The silver lining is we’ve got a lot of sunshine in the forecast next week.”
The extreme cold weather alert also activates a number of local services, such as opening up warming centres and assisting in getting some of the city’s most vulnerable people off the street.
