This is a big deal for China. An ambitious mission, and success.

But it bothers me they did this with a cloak of secrecy, almost like the Soviet Union during the space race, only announcing the mission after it was complete.

How are they going to deal with who actually owns what parts of the moon and establish what kind of political and social paradigm will be followed or is this first come first owns. Who ever dominates the moon will have significant power because they can create and send powerful missiles just on kinetic energy alone due to speed such as the Kinetic Missile.

This is exciting but also concerning.

Best case scenario for the moon is that it becomes a billionaires tourist destinations and they use the money to build bases for future space missions. Worst case scenario it is becomes a battle ground for territory between USA/China/Russia .

Huawei 5G networks, the Chinese moon landing, several thousand foreign Chinese science grad students in America are the reality that America must grapple with. I follow space stuff as close as I follow the MPAs in the GTA like a hobby, many in the space community felt that there was a veil of secrecy even prior to this event. Their efforts and space projects feel shady with lace of ulterior motives.
