Sad to see so many smashed up pumpkins in my neighbourhood. :( Pumpkins are nutritious and delicious!
Small compact pumpkins are quite good to cut up and cook. I find that large "Jack O Lantern" size pumpkins are not particularly good to eat. They are bland and the consistency of the flesh is mushy. A pumpkin grower once told me this. Large pumpkins are not grown for their culinary appeal.

They are grown to be carved.
But their seeds are still delicious!

I cut them into slices and bake them in the oven with olive oil, garlic and spices. Very good and cheap. I see them around my neighborhood too, it's like a cemetery of pumpkins.

you think pumpkins are wasted.

wait til christmas comes and you see all the trees wasted by being cut, bought, decorated and then thrown away for garbage pickup all just for two week use.

At least pumpkins and Christmas trees are composted or mulched. Those poppies everyone is wearing will be landfill.

Real Christmas trees are far better for the environment than fake ones. While they are alive, they are filtering out pollution and turning c02 in o2. Then once they are finished as Christmas trees, they are composted into mulch for your garden.

Plastic trees are made of oil that has been refined, then when they wear out, and they do wear out, they end up in a landfill where they are buried and will not decompose for 100,000 years.

Local shelters will take pumpkins but only for a brief period because they get inundated.

They go into your Yard waste bags whole, or into your Green Bin cut up. The only reason any get smashed is householders too tired to clean them away after the candy runs out, or more committed to being the first to decorate in Autumn than prudently considering consequences.

I disagree. When I bake pumpkin pie, I prefer the jack o lantern type of pumpkin. It's a lighter, smoother flavour. Many people have told me they prefer my pies.
