Really?? Damn, if Faith Goldy won, then I would have been converted to a right winger. She would have offered free VIP Sessions!!
Clearly, the people that elected the dead wood disagree with you. The truth is, that running and holding public office is a thankless job. I certainly would never do it. So be thankful we actually have people that are willing to put themselves in the meat grinder.
Low profile elected positions - trustee, alderperson - have little news coverage and little voter turnout. Unless you fuck up dreadfully, you tend to be reelected almost by default. You've fixed potholes for enough constituents, your name is familiar and the voters tick it off when they vote for mayor and so on.
But, who is going to say no to Free VIP sessions, especially by some very special ladies from this Board. :wink:Was never going to happen, but now we know how to convert you.
Oh, please! The power of incumbency in the municipal politics is overwhelming. We are at the point in Toronto where some council seats are becoming hereditary. That is an unhealthy condition because it precludes potential quality candidates from throwing their names into the ring.
It's what gave us Mayor Ford, until he fucked up. Term limits would have might have spared us that debacle. Of course the latest Ford cruised safely to harbour on the family name, and no known achievements. As did a few other family names like Mammoliti and Nunziata at the TDSDB, not to mention the Colle, Cressy, Layton heirs on Council, who at least have proven they put in the hours and do the work.
Given she was in no debates, and gave no reported speeches I'm aware of, Faith Goldy's performance has to be put down top that same; 'dunno nuthin' about them, but I recognize the name,' factor.
In spite of all the Dougie Doo-do and hoorah, my ward with two well-respected incumbents facing off ad a couple of very visible challengers still only managed a bare 51% turnout. Speaks poorly of the media coverage of where we live, and the stuff that affects each of us daily.
About 3.33% - righties, people who thought she was "hot" and a "shit disturber" from a couple of news quickies, people who ticked off names at random, Russian secret service agents who murdered decent citizens and had plastic surgery to look like them and stole their victims' ID to vote......
