I've been watching Bond films since I was a kid and read some of the original books.
Daniel Craig has been my favourite Bond since Sean Connery. He brought an edge back to the role that was missing with Roger Moore.
I had trouble believing that Moore could fight his way out of a wet paper bag. Dalton and Brosnan were better, but Craig has taken it up a few notches.
In fairness to everyone who has played the role, there are a lot of other factors that go into it. The movies have gotten way edgier recently, in the same way that Marvel and DC movies have evolved.
Idris Elba could be a good fit. Rupert Friend could also be good. Other than those two, I'd say go off the board and look for a relative unknown.

I really liked Timothy Dalton as 007, License to Kill is one of the grittiest and most under rated Bond films.

I almost missed how Daniel Craig got the Bond franchise. He had a major role in Steven Spielberg's Munich, imho one of his best film. He also made a crime thriller for the then unknown Matthew Vaughan (Kick Ass, X-Men: Days of Future Past) called Layer Cake. It's significant since it played a major role in Craig becoming 007, it was also the first film of the newly sober Tom Hardy.

Great opening sequence.

They should get a Black, Welsh disabled lesbian with 10 kids. However they would have a massive fight with the British Civil Service over hiring her if they found one.

I've gotten tired of the James Bond films, been watching them since the late 70's, seen all the old ones more than once. It gets to the point where I notice the huge flaws more than enjoy it.

That being said, they could cast a bag of manure or even Justin Beiber and I'd still watch it. Kinda like the Star Trek movies I guess.

Peter Dinkage is playing Herve Vellachaize (one of the memorable Bond henchman/villains) in an upcoming HBO film: "My dinner with Herve". So why not "elevate" him as the next Bond? Dinklage has the confidence and acting chops to pull it off and if his size is a problem, he could borrow some of Tom Cruise's heel lifts. Failing that, Simon Pegg. Go the route where a superspy is somebody you would least expect. Kristen Schaal would be a great Bond girl for Simon Pegg's Bond with Jack Black and Eric Andre playing conjoined Siamese twins as the Bond Villain.

The Bourne series set a new bar for how a spy film should be made so the Bond producers really did not have a choice.

That being said, Richard Madden ( Bodyguard 2018-David Budd ) could be a suitable Bond.

Excellent scene. Very dramatic. Never heard of this show before. Now I have to find it.
