How is it a great day for democracy??? One unelected judge overturned a legislation passed by the elected body. This has an appeal written all over it.Initial reaction:
F.U. Ford!!!
Great day for democracy.
Tinpot dictator beware.
In 2012 the probability of Ont defaulting on its debt within 30 years was 78.9%Initial reaction:

LOL!!!!How is it a great day for democracy??? One unelected judge overturned a legislation passed by the elected body. This has an appeal written all over it.
That's an opinion from a right wing source, its not fact, larue. In 2012 the probability of Ont defaulting on its debt within 30 years was 78.9%
If Ford fights this and tries to appeal he'll end up delaying the election and costing the city more then he would have saved."Passing a law that changes the city's electoral districts in the middle of its election and undermines the overall fairness of the election is antithetical to the core principles of our democracy," Belobaba says in his written decision.
It's not a decree it's a law. But, you knew that. Maybe.LOL!!!!
Due process trumps decrees from wannabe dictators here in Canada.
"I find that the reduction from 47 to 25 in the number of City wards and the corresponding increase in ward-size population from an average of about 61,000 to 111, 000 substantially interfered with the municipal voter’s freedom of expression under s. 2(b) of the Charter of Rights, and in particular her right to cast a vote that can result in effective representation," the judge continued in his written decision.
You don't have to be a judge to know when a 'law enacted' is WRONG, discriminatory and arbitrary. It's not a decree it's a law. But, you knew that. Maybe.
Look stupid, the mathematics of interest rates & debt do not know left vs. right,That's an opinion from a right wing source, its not fact, larue.
Totally unprovoked insults.Look stupid, the mathematics of interest rates & debt do not know left vs. right,
BTW stupid, the Drummond report commissioned by the liberals arrived at the same conclusion.
Not elected by Toronto. How is it a great day for democracy??? One unelected judge overturned a legislation passed by the elected body. This has an appeal written all over it.
Ford's gov't lawyers went 'crickets' when questioned by the judge about 'why the rush' to enact the law and 'what was considered' when enacting the law. It's not a decree it's a law. But, you knew that. Maybe.
John, you can go on your "we are in a debt spiral" rant all you want and say that saving 25 Mill was Ford,s reason for his actions....I disagree...Ford, a one term councilor, the head of a failing business, a failed mayoral candidate and a guy allegedlly trying to screw his own sister in law out of money simply took an opportunity to give John Tory and city council a big fuck you and he failed.....In 2012 the probability of Ont defaulting on its debt within 30 years was 78.9%
Since then the debt has increased by 37% and interest rates are starting to increase.
The province has to find cost savings where ever possible.
If/ when the province defaults, it will be the public sector unions who will suffer the most. Ask a greek.
"Tinpot dictator beware." should read. Unions beware
Crickets is a legal language that the judge decided to include in his written opinion, I believe. As I said, the decision will be appealed, if Doug has any balls. However!!! While this will play well downtown, this ruling is a catnip for the PC voters, specifically those unsure about Ford's leadership and he will milk it for what it is worth. The judge may have just ensured Ford's reelection. The open judicial activism is one of the reasons we have Fords and Trump's. Don't cry later, you've been warned.Ford's gov't lawyers went 'crickets' when questioned by the judge about 'why the rush' to enact the law and 'what was considered' when enacting the law.
Unable to win in a court of law as his 'law' was unconstitutional, discriminatory and arbitrary Ford is promising a bombshell of a response.
His vindictiveness, vengeance and yes hate for Toronto is so vile that the probability that he will invoke Section 33 "The Notwithstanding Clause" to ram his decree down the throats of his hated Toronto is quite high.
I did a quick skim without noting the critters. This is the PDF of the decison. Sure, Sure, the sun came up today. That will ensure Ford's reelection. What else is new , jc?Crickets is a legal language that the judge decided to include in his written opinion, I believe. Exactly! DoFo needs to stay in his own fucking lane. Not elected by Toronto.
What business is it of an MPP from Rainy River or Renfrew how many Councillors we have in our town? Let them change the number of MPPs at Queen's Park if they think government's too big and dysfunctional. Most of them were elected by smaller populations than they proposed to force on us. With each of them representing 100,000+ constituents, we could lose thirty or so of them and save way more in paycheques, travel expenses and office costs than DoFo's pissant few million here in Hogtown.
That is what they were elected to do, govern the Province, not Toronto.

Actually, it is because of undemocratic scofflaws like the Wallaces, Faubuses, Nixons, Fords and Trumps that we have judicial activism. And of course once they learned the tactic, the Clarence Thomases and Kavanaughs were sure to follow; today's GOP's even more committed to sewing up the Courts than defending the White House. However, you may have noted that's all US of A stuff. Before we copied their Constitution-thingy we didn't have much of that sorta foolishness up here.
Back to local matters: As the Judge said, all Ford had to do to have his way was respect the basic principle of democracy, and enact his 'reform' calmly, without overmuch haste, in the best interests of all. Instead he rushed to ram it into law as quick as he could so he could gloat while the City that rejected him squealed like a pig. And the law stopped him.
