The last dance: Why the Canadian strip club is a dying institution

I didn't bother reading the article, but not hard to figure out why the strip club industry is dying. The value is for what your getting is shit. Way more bang for your buck out there.
True. The drinks are ridiculously overpriced and $20 for a 3-minute lapdance is shite value compared to just about any other form of entertainment. This is why the "pure" crowd has disappeared as they went looking elsewhere for sexual services at a more respectable price, to be replaced by the seedier crowd that goes looking for extra value. It's not surprise that the most successful clubs these days are those that cater to that seedier demographic.

I would agree that the value for the money just isn't there. That plus the constant scamming on the part of dancers, the hit and miss (more miss than hit it seems) nature of the dancers, etc.

Plus, the thrill is gone. Seeing a naked woman is great and all, but it isn't the thrill it used to be back when. (And I'm probably dating myself and it's probably a "getting older" thing too where you just think, "meh, I'd sooner keep my hard earned dollars in my wallet" (which is a value thing again).)

For $140 to $160.00 you can get a body slide with a beautiful woman where you feel that you've come away with a thrill. A buck 60 disappears after 5 air dances at a strip joint. (I say 5 because you will have counted 5 and she will insist that it was 8.)

One of the reason you started to see MPA's open near all the strip clubs. When the MPA's first started to pop up, my friends would go to strip clubs and then to MPA. After a while, they just started skipping the SC right to the MPA.

I can't believe some them still even charge a fee to get into the area for a private dance, and better yet, if you want a different stripper, you have to pay the fee again. The SC owners just fail recognize the competition and adjust. Their monopoly on the market disappeared a long time ago, and they failed to counter act.

Definitely the MPA's have taken over from the strip clubs. Back when places like "For Your Eyes Only" with high end dancers were new and exciting, there were far fewer massage places. Eg: Long-time forum members will remember when 490A Yonge (Lou's) was THE place to see a "high end" MPA and the rooms were like walk-in closets. Then more and more sprang up in the 'burbs with many going high end on rooms and decor. Now it's a veritable cornucopia for MPA's. Still, I kind of miss a downtown place like Lou's - great for a late afternoon, post-work quickie with Jessica or Nikki.... I could get there from work in about 10 minutes!

I remember my 1st time walking in downtown Montreal ~12 years ago and it was full of strip joints; now you might find one or two at most

and I had always considered it overpriced compared to the alternatives

Way back when, drinks weren't overpriced and dances were $5 a song. To this day, I'm still amazed by the mileage I got for $25-$30. There was also no internet and limited MPs. As a business person, it was acceptable to take clients to a SC and right it off. They've now have both more competition and real estate values have skyrocketed. So it's no wonder they're in decline.

There is doubtless some truth to the article (such as that the oil patch isn't currently what it used to be). But it strikes me that what you both write has far greater validity as to why strip clubs aren't what they used to be.

Bottom line strip clubs are poor value for money compared with escorts.

25 years ago was the heyday. No executive MP's. Th escort scene was unreliable before the internet era. You could go to a hot spot like Cheaters and get a half-hour of wriggles with a super hottie for $30!

By 2000, the prices had doubled, then quadrupled. Girls were still decent looking, but the value had gone. By 2005, the internet had re created the escort industry and it was reliable, less sleazy, safe and the girls hotter and better quality. Add in the sudden growth of the MP scene and fewer and fewer guys went to SC's any more. I sure didn't. Eventually they'll die completely up here and go the way of burlesque stage shows and dirty movie houses. Just a little footnote in some guy's quirky folk history of filth and fun in the 6ix.

I read the article, and it dawned on me that strip club owners are the same as every other business owner, when their business is in decline; They focus on every problem coming from the outside while trying to hide missed opportunities and the fact that they alone killed their collective golden goose.

Why pay for the fantasy of having sex with a stripper when you can pay for actually having sex with a MPA?

All the hottest girls are MPA's now. I've lost count of how many MPAs told me they tried stripping but the money wasn't there. Now they fuck n' suck and make a (small) fortune.

Frankly, I'll be almost happy when SCs are gone. The endless death spiral gets tiresome.

The next innovation should be upscale brothels. Sort of nightclub meets stripclub meets brothel. Hope I live to see it!

Like the FKK clubs in Germany?
I doubt we'll ever see that here in Toronto. Frankly, I think we're moving further away from that kind of thing in terms of legislation and societal attitude, not closer.

Why were there so few massage parlours decades ago?

I wonder. Not very long ago these were illegal:
- gambling
- gay marriage
- marijuana

Who knows what could spur some group or person to get it done?

All it could take is something like a cure for AIDS and bang - there could be a whole advocacy group pushing for it.

And it's pretty clear that each new generation is less hungup on stuff like this and more open.

Wish I was around in 60 years to see!

In Brazil they have TERMA's. Kind of like the FKK clubs in Germany I guess. It's like a small night club, filled with private rooms. You can go and just party, and if the mood calls for it, the women are right there and off you go. That would be the shit.
