I know, I know it is just Sept BUT I am curious. When do you put your winter tires on? As a sunny southern transplant I have never been on it with this sort of thing. Help me out fellas

Welcome to Toronto Madison. First of all, smart drivers install winter tires. The #1 thing they have doing for them is they significantly decrease your stopping distance over all season tires.

It's recommended that you install winter tires once the temperature in your area is regularly 7 degrees Celsius or less. Below 7 degrees Celsius, the rubber on all-season tires progressively hardens making them less effective as temperatures drop.

What if you don't do much driving and Toronto cleans their roads fairly quick? I have a beater that I use in the winter a corolla , do smaller cars need winter tires more than heavier cars?

Do the swap mid-October. Why? Beat the rush. The two weeks of extra wear on your winter tires is negligible vs your time. Besides, with the crazy weather - you never know when the first snow will fall. Might be early - might be late - but if you have your snow tires on you don't need to worry about it.

Thank you all! It is sometimes hard to separate what is really a thing from a marketing thing.

Get all-weather tires. That way you dont have to change your all-seasons for winter tires

Related question: The new-to-me old car I bought came with Michelin Run-Flat Tires in good shape with lotsa tread.

My half-century of driving has all been front-wheel drive, as much in Ottawa and Montreal as here and I've never felt I 'needed' the extra help of the special tires. I no longer drive for pay, and my few short trips are at times and conditions of my choosing. So I'm thinkin' no snows, but these are already 'not your ordinary tires'.

Can anyone speak to how they might do in snow, ice and cold? Any sense in weaning off the run-flats with some 'deflatable' snows?

Southern belle? :)

I would suspect you don't put a lot of kilometres on your car? I would get them installed way before the rush because I have tried to get in the busy season and they flat out tell me there is a 3-4 week wait for an appointment. The last thing you want is to get stuck with your current tires when a snow storm hits. Just my two cents.

A good brand of snow tires are Bridgestone Blizzaks if they make your size, you can buy them with your eyes closed!

GTA & Thereabouts...
Before Hallowe’en for sure. A bit earlier is better so I don’t freeze my ass off...

Any true snow tire is better than an all-season. I’m a fan of Toyo Tires.

I second the before Halloween suggestion. You don't want to put it off for too long, or else you will be caught in the rush of everyone else going to get their tire changed as well.
Many of us changed the tires back to all season/summer tires too early this year and got caught out with one last, icy snow storm.
