=Smallcock;6173820]Do you feel the same way about that African dictator named Robert Mugabe? Germany's law is 'is contrary to international law." Is the Ontario Civil Liberties Association a troll organization???
Big Poppa Pump, Germany never enshrined "freedom of speech" in their post WWII Constitution. Promote hatred there and you will be taken to the woodshed, she knew the score and got burned. Germany is very sensible in how it treats corrosive elements within it's borders. Unlike the USA, in Germany Scientology is considered a cult. And your Robert Mugabe comparison doesn't make sense, Monika Schaefer was never an anti-apartheid guerilla corrupted by power.

Ernst Zundel was a very stupid man. He promoted hatred in Canada, ignoring the fact that he's German born. Instead of wasting tax payer money to prosecuting him, he was deported to Germany. His chances of proving his rights were less than zero there and he ended up riding the coco express.

You reap what you sow.

It's a social utility argument. The old adage is "speech is good, but someone who yells "bomb!" in a crowded concert venue gets to go to jail for a while."

In this country, we put people in jail if they say shit they know is false simply to stir up race hate and profit from it. Like Holocaust deniers. Both headline Holocaust denial trials in Canada involved careful consideration of the Canadian constitution and an in depth examination of whether Keegstra and Zundel really believed that the Holocaust didn't occur and whether they were consciously lying and attempting to profit from stirring up hate against Jews. The court found that both men were consciously lying and profiting from anti antisemitism. So they were jailed.

I have no problem with that. In fact, I really like it. If you have a problem with that, live in some other friggin' country. Canada doesn't need people like you.

And you know the best part?... I get to see your buddy-boy Ezra Levant and your buddy-girl Faith Goldy tread very, very carefully and watch their P's and Q's whenever they open their vile, goddam rightie traps in case they slip up and trip over that line and then............. they get to go to jail as well.
The first part of your post makes sense and I agree with you.

Why do you need to follow up a sound rebuttal by taking a jab at anyone who my lean towards the right and take it to the extreme? IMHO, it kind of takes away from an otherwise good response.

Why?.....

Because anti semites, nazis and racists really, really, really piss me off and I lose my temper.

Most of the time the issue is not solely "free speech"... it is free speech directed toward organizing political action by and with other new-nazi grifters. At that point - especially in Germany - is far more than an academic issue since their political program has historically involved killing Jews, Roma, homosexuals, leftists, and Slavs. One might say the latter is the ultimate denial of free speech if there ever was one. Of course, the far right doesn't think twice about going after everyday, miliquetoast defenders of free speech either. I am fine with putting the self-declared Nazis through a judicial process (Germany has one) and throwing them in jail if they meet the standard of hate speech.

Ezra is Jewish. Does he believe it should be illegal to deny the Holocaust? Would be interesting to know. Faith was once employed by Ezra... do you think they're in agreement on this issue?

It's an unsustainable model that will lose support over time.

What kind of sick world do we live in where denying a historical event can get you sent to prison???
There are more places in this world that jail people for such stuff, and under worse conditions with less opportunity to defend yourself than not.

Ask a more realistic question, or start your moral protest with some of the many worse offenders.

I guess we all need to have a hobby of sorts. You do realize that people who lean left share some of those same behaviors don't you?

The question is being posed because the subject is a Canadian in another western democracy. Obviously the things that apply between western democracies cannot be expected to occur in most of the nations on earth.

On a related note I have indeed expressed moral outrage at many goings-on in other countries.

This incident is precisely the kind that a true free speech defender needs to advocate for....
Except this and your example are beyond free speech. Anyone who goes to the length of creating a pulpit to promote these views are clearly interested in the promotion of racial hatred, not any kind of academic endeavour.

You call this debate trolling while someone's freedom is at stake....
Freedom at stake? Damn right. Germany's laws are pretty damn clear and she broke them. Considering Canadian case law agrees with Germany on this Canada's only involvement would be to help Germany's prosecutor.

According to one version of their WWII history Japan was
suckered into Pearl Harbour by FDR and Nanking Massacre
never happened. At least the Japanese has the good sense
not to jail those who deny their version of history. And neither would the rest of the world jail any Japanese who
deny their atrocious past.
People who do so are generally not part of a campaign to promote racial hatred.

p.s. Japan should face their past crimes head on instead of pretending they didn't happen.

How does denying the Holocaust promote racial hatred?
