As it turns out - the tweet was on the "Parts Unknown" twitter account, and the show has apologized. So the tweet wasn't even written by Bourdain, although as the host - he is getting all the heat. It's actually been picked up by press all over the world (which shows how popular the show is) - with some writing as if "Newfie" is one of the worst derogatory names out there. Anyway looks like the episode will be a good one. Meanwhile - Bourdain is in Bali probably taping for the show.

I thought the term stemmed from the old "Newfie" jokes that were so popular when I was a kid. (And I didn't even know what a Newfie was.)

I have heard Newfoundlanders refer to themselves as "Newfs" actually.

And I know that although there is a negative connotation associated with the word Newfie, that it was also not considered hugely offensive anymoe.

Don't know when the "offensive" tweet went out, but this was one of the earlier show's tweets about this Sunday's episode. Does this look like Bourdain would be talking derogatorily of Newfoundland and its people? Can't understand why there would be a knee-jerk reaction to a show that will undoubtedly make more people want to visit the place.

The tourism people are quite confident that those small clusters of brightly coloured homes in isolated hamlets is all reason people need to come to Newfoundland. come to the rock. drive for 4 hours. nothing to see or do until you get to "the corner" look at the four houses. take a picture. Drive back 4 hours to a diner for a coffee.

Must be Kathleen"s people running the tourism show.

I know nothing about Newfoundland.

All I know is that it's low key, lots of seasonal work like fisherman, golf (I think), and as some of you stated everytime they show NF they show those neighbourhoods with red or yellow paint.

Anything else to do in NF?

For context, the quote asked viewers to “Embrace the Newfies as they are.”

I lived in St John’s for a year a decade ago, and frequently travelled between there and St Anthony. Two very different parts of Newfoundland. I tend to not use “Newfie” even when I’m with Newfoundlanders who insist they’re ‘Newfies.’ That’s their word. Even after you’re screeched in.

It’s like being on a (proper) FNMI reserve. They might call themselves ‘Indians’ (or ‘injun’), but unless you’re a community member, it’s not your word to use. Or if you’re hanging out in the Village and call someone ‘a queer,’ ‘a dyke’ or ‘a fag.’ If you’re part of that community, generally it’s acceptable. If you’re not, I know you’d be advised against using it. No matter how much you like rap, or how many of your friends are black, using the n-word is generally a no-no.

When words take on meaning that is derogatory to specific groups of people whose grouping is out of their control, outsiders tend to stop using them.

You don’t see much use of whore, hooker, or even prostitute here for this exact reason.
