I will ignore it because I'm not important enough to care. But I got a jolt about the threat, and I'm sure the US $295 is a low enough threshold to get some people to pay....but then they have you on the hook. Blood suckers.

I've never gotten that particular threat before, but I have gotten ones that claim there is a hitman after me and that the only way to save my life is to pay them a randsome. If you want to mess with the guy go post the e-mail over at 419 eater. The guys over there make a hobby out of messing with scammers.

There is no video and it is doubtful he even has your contacts
Easy enough to check your own PC for the virus

I've gotten two such emails in the last month....seems to be the current scam! Loved one of them...it started off apologizing for their English but be assured the threat was real That one made me chuckle

I had some ransom ware hit on me back in 2012 for the first time. I was surfing xhamster at the time. At the time, they said they were RCMP and had a crest for the Canadian Pacific Railway Police. They wanted gift certificates to unlock my machine. Thanks to TERB I installed Malwarebytes via a USB key and solved the problem . I've picked up malware a couple similar issues since that time, always on xhamster actually.

Now I don't go near xhamster.

Are you using Malwarebytes?

If not, you should and you should run a scan at the very least.

That and put a piece of electrical tape over your camera.

It's fake. You can tell by the way the writer goes from medical terminology "self- abuse" to British jargon "Wanking" without missing a beat. I almost believed him for a second though..........

I have AVS anti-virus software and wandered through porn sites including xhamster without a problem. I do get red flags which take care of the occasional malware. I've left my webcam unplugged since I learned that western intelligence agencies have the ability to spy through the computer webcam.

I thought it was brilliant.

Perhaps a bandaid might be worth it.

Yes, 419 Eater is a site that has turned screwing with internet scammers into a sport. They basically pose as victims and then do as much as they can to waste a scammer's time and resources. Some of the stunts the 419 Eater crowd pull are kind of sadistic, but considering the scammers are out there trying to rip off innocent people I don't feel too sorry for them.

Just pick up one of those slider thingys that allow you to cover and uncover the camera. Works great.

Well the threat window has passed with no repercussions. I also belatedly realized that any porn I enjoy is one my iPad where I fall outside the reverse camera angle. Plus if it was real they would have mailed me a clip of the dirty deed....which probably would have had more malware on it. Scammers

I use Avast free anti-virus, which is very good. It warns you if you're going to click on something nasty. Lots of annoying popups asking me to upgrade but that's a small price to pay for protection.
