Why an Ottawa professor says pimps keep sex workers safe

Obviously I haven't read her book and reviewed the methodology, but I believe one problem, and not an unimportant problem is semantics: What the article terms pimps and she terms "third-party workers" seemingly includes agencies and a great many women (who traditionally have been termed Madams not pimps). Those are not those who most of us term pimps.

I don't think too many women who manage sex workers would term themselves "pimps" and the standard, negative connotations associated with a traditional pimp. This article is misleading and is basically about 3rd party management and how it works, assuming the 3rd party managers are NOT traditional pimps as we know them.

Just another self proclaimed "expert", confirmed by her incorrect term usage.

Chris Bruckert is far from a self proclaimed expert. She was a sex worker with an extensive history in the industry who is now a PhD and is one of the founding members of P.O.W.E.R. which had a seat at the table in the last SCC. Her research and insight into the Canadian industry is expansive. Her terminology is accurate, it's the reporter who went for click bait. And yes when I owned an agency, I didn't shirk at the word pimp because I know how the general public defines anyone who makes money in the industry that isn't performing the actual labour. And I also think that predatory pimps do protect their workers to a degree. Anyone hapless enough to fall for a pimp would also fall for every exploitive, manipulative client move and it's better to be taken advantage of by one man than by many...

Thanks for that CAT, I should have done some research before commenting.

But If I'm reading you correctly,... I have disagree with your take on the term pimp,... the general publics view of a pimp is always, and completely negative.

What's important here, is the general publics view as it relates to the profession,... and pimp does NOT have a positive ring to it.

You may think its cool to call yourself a pimp,... but to do so when trying to help the profession, is going to have the opposite effect.

Again, thanks for an insiders view.

Regardless a pimp is a pimp ; whether it be female or male. If you are making money ( living off the avails ) of a sex worker then you are a pimp by definition and by what society thinks. What I got from this article was that she really wants it to be decriminalized and that she thinks everyone should have a pimp which is not the case .

A lot of females have their own form of protection - whether it be having a friend/ law on speed dial, having bear/pepper spray & sometimes it just comes down to knowing how to defend yourself if need be. Smart ladies take precautions and at least tell their friends where they are if anything was to happen.

Also , what has me baffled about this article is the " seventy-five" people she claimed to interview.. Whos to say she wasn't friends with half the people she interviewed ? - therefore making her article/ book biased.

Catherine - the term "pimp" is not to be used lightly. You may not think it is a big deal to be labelled as a pimp but to the general public it is. Yes all pimps do protect their women to a degree - some of them will even kill for their girls if someone tries to mess with them because well then you are messing with the pimps income and they generally do not like that.

I guess to sum it up ; I don't believe having pimps should be a NECESSITY to this industry - as ive stated before the best thing a woman can do is make sure someone knows where they are at all times and always always make sure you have some type of protection.

I didn't say I used it, I said I didn't shirk at it. I was called a pimp, charged as a pimp and took the hits. The same as I don't flinch on the inside when someone calls me a whore now; I have thick skin. I was simply a business woman but that doesn't get an emotional response which is what the righteous powers that be live off of...

cat - I don't think admitting you were charged as a pimp is something to gloat about... its not a good look. You and I both know you don't owe anything to anyone on this board and you don't have to justify yourself. You may think you are a business woman/ entrepreneur but society thinks different. This is a very touchy subject and one that can get out of hand quickly if its not treaded on lightly.

Dr. Bruckert isn't advocating for all sex workers to have pimps, she wants middle management to not be criminalized. Better labour laws brings better management and for the ladies who prefer to have a manager; that's a good thing. I'm an agency girl at heart, I hate being independent but I've never found an agency worthy of working for in Canada. If you were a member of P.O.W.E.R (a mere $5 per year membership) you would not be disparaging her concerning her research methods.

I realize you and I are not acquainted but I would appreciate it if before you comment on me "taking it lightly" you actually had an understanding of my experience. I wasn't making light of it but I don't give it a demonic weight because it's a word and taking it's power is key in changing perceptions. Are there predator managers out there? Absolutely. But as I've said before, if a woman is going to be taken advantage of; better it be at the hands of one man than many...

Lol! I don't care what society or anyone thinks. I've never hid my history, I've written extensively about it for over a decade. I owned an agency in the US and was indicted for it. I'm not ashamed of it, I'm not apologizing for it and I'm certainly not tip toeing around about it. The fact is that it happened and I have tremendous insight because of the experience. I'm not gloating, just stating facts...

I wasn't telling you to take "take it lightly" I said you should not be carelessly throwing the word "pimp" out there and announcing that you were charged for it. I simply said its a topic that should be treaded on lightly.. Also regardless if she wants middle management to not be criminalized - a pimp is a pimp regardless if it is an agency, single female, or single male. either way you throw the dice society will label it as a "pimp"

Your right - I don't know your story but on this thread you've shared enough to give me some kind of idea... Not judging and not knocking your hustle at all. I am an indy sp so I cant relate to agency life or this P.O.W.E.R thing you are speaking about. I love being indy and I wouldn't change it for the world. Agencies just take coin for doing the same thing I do - booking appointments, driving to outcalls, posting ads, getting hotels , etc. I can do all that stuff myself, don't need someone else posting my ads or answering my phone. LOL.

I hate talking on the internet because most of the time things are often misconstrued or taken the wrong way. I was only pointing out that this is a very very very touchy subject.

happy hobbying and stay safe gents.

I'm with you on the fact that "pimp" only has a negative connotation. There is no such thing as a "good pimp". The implication is very clear - the lady is being exploited. I don't think anyone ever assumes a pimp does anything to ensure the workers are safe - the assumption is he (or she) is only interested in the lady earning money for him and in general, the pimp is simply a user taking a cut but not providing anything for it. Totally different from a agency/manager who screens clients, provides booking services/advertisement/resources, and basically is a manager who works for the girl and isn't her boss (that's how many agencies portray themselves - as a service the lady is hiring to manage things for them). Clearly an agency that is corrupt or doesn't put worker's safety first is no different from a traditional "pimp" and is guilty of the same crime - exploitation.

At the end of the day, if you are a manager/agency/"pimp", you know whether you are taking advantage of a lady or actually earning your keep by being something that assists her with being an SP.
