+1. we don't really know what caused the depression. I had a friend 25 years ago who suffered with depression....the first time he tried to hang himself he couldn't do it...his family laughed at him...well he hang himself with the same extension cord that he tried the first time and was just there...it was a span of 3 months from the first try to the 2nd...

Excacly. Once you feel a little better get yourself a bike or a motorbike. Bikes always make me feel better no matter how bad I feel. Riding weather is just around the corner.
Whenever I see someone biking downtown in -20c through snow and ice; and I'm sitting in my warm car, I get depressed just looking at them.
Nobody talks about riding bikes in the city in -20. Summer is around the corner. You ride bikes on hilly and twisty sideroads somewhere up in a country with forest and fields around you or singletrack in the actual forest or a mountain. Riding your bike thru the downtown traffic is obviously not something most people enjoy
If you are having these thoughts, it is considered a medical emergency. Go to your nearest hospital emergency ward. As others have said, no booze or street drugs. Healthy eating. Get some exercise. Find a friend or three to hang out with that make you feel good. See a counselor or psychiatrist

If you can afford it or have employment benefits to cover it, reach out to a psychologist specialized in talk therapy. Call a hotline dedicated to suicidal individuals and see if they can provide you with resources. Depression is dicey in that we never know what triggers it. It may be chemical in which case getting a prescription would help. If it’s circumstantial, talking things out with someone who can help reframe you will help. The important thing to remember is that (as dark as things may seem) the feelings will pass.
Doctors and Medication will not work... This thing has been around and will continue - If there is a cure, the pharma industry will not give it cause they wanna make you more sick and get more medicines in return. Try Cannabis - coming from someone who have seen with my own eyes the recovery of someone so dear to me. You don't have to believe me but I know how it feels and this advice won't be beneficial for me as much as those who suffers in this. The absolute last thing you would want to do if seriously depressed is to do weed. Even the cannabis clinics warn against it for depressed people. The link you gave brings us to one of those organizations that are in it for the money, just like those you have accused of being no help. Do some real research into the psychotic effects of cannabis on a person’s mental state, and you will learn the damage done.

The best therapy is cognitive-based therapy. Drugs only stabilize and might help with symptoms. There is no cure for many types of depression, only learning how to cope with it. And yes, been there, done that, and also recently. Ontario Shores helps a lot of people with depression, anxiety and other disorders, with NO weed.

May not work. Frankly, the solution is usually tied to the cause, and the cause for depression can be varied. Weed may for some, but not for others, Counseling may work for some, but not for others. Meds may work for some, but not for others.
The trick is to seek help and start trying the various methods.
You have a good grasp of the issues and possible solutions. However most medical practitioners, if not all, highly recommend therapy over all other means, for most people. Weed has been linked, I believe, to cause or worsen psychotic complications in most people.
I suffer from mild depression. It is a chemical imbalance in the body, and I don't think its possible to heal that.
I take light doses of medication, and feel great.
The trick is to find the meds that work for you.
Not my experience with emergency when I was admitted, and both the police and ambulance accompanied me into the hospital. Maybe, your situation merited that intervention, but not mine, and I had already overdosed on tranquilisers, and refused to go to the hospital.
Not every situation is the same. Don’t paint everything with the same brush. I truly feel sorry for your experiences, and hope that you are and continue to be better. If you want to talk about it, pm me. We often need to talk with those who have suffered or continue to suffer.
I've dealt with depression and anxiety issues since I was a teenager. I have these types of thoughts pop into my mind every once and while too. I've found that finding something positive and fun to distract myself with can often help, even if it is just watching some good comedy on TV or talking with a friend on the phone about something other than my negative thoughts. I find that my negative thoughts usually pass after a while. If this is a persistent problem therapy can definitely help with finding coping mechanisms and identifying what triggers this type of thinking in you. If you have suicidal thoughts that are becoming overwhelming or all consuming to the point where you feel you are in imminent danger of hurting yourself then you need to go to the hospital. If necessary they can admit you so you can have a safe place to deal with them where you won't be able to do yourself harm. Anyway I know it can get rough sometimes, but you are not alone, I hope you are feeling better today.
Not every situation is the same, thankfully.
I've escorted a friend in mental distress to the hospital. The staff do watch for signs on whether the person may hurt themselves, and have lockable rooms close to the emerg that they use to hold people. I've been in them. My friend did not get admitted to the psych ward, but the doc discussed the option with me.
I think that we are in agreement. The intervention that is needed dictates the actions of the caregivers and law enforcement.
It is not at all a desirable situation to accompany someone in distress. Thankfully, there are people like you who care enough about their friends and others to be there for them and to ensure that the ones in need get attention. You are a great friend, and I am sure that your friend realized this.
If someone is depressed, there should be reasons why right?
Family life, lonely, money troubles, crappy job, illness etc....
Instead of meds, how about for things that you have control of, try to change and improve before taking drugs from a doc?
