Canadians urged to exercise caution in Jamaica’s Montego Bay amid state of emergency

The Canadian government is urging any Canadians located in or around the popular tourist destination of Montego Bay to exercise caution and listen to local authorities amid a military lockdown in the area.

On Thursday, Jamaican authorities imposed a state of emergency in the northwestern parish of St. James, which includes Montego Bay, in response to a severe spike in violent crimes in the area.

“Military forces have been deployed to the area in an attempt to stabilize the situation,” Travel Canada said in a release.

“If you are staying at a resort in the affected area, restrict your movements beyond resort security perimeters. If you do travel outside these perimeters, use transportation arranged or provided by the resort. Use organized tour operators for excursions and travel to and from the airport. If you are in the affected area, be extremely vigilant, follow the instructions of local authorities and monitor local news.”

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said in a statement that criminal activity in the area had grown to the point that it was endangering public safety, necessitating a state of public emergency.

While the state of emergency is in place, security forces will have the power to carry out searches, reduce access to certain areas and detain people without a warrant.

All persons driving in and out of the parish will be subject to a vehicle and personal search, the statement added.

Last year, 335 murders were recorded in St. James, which is twice as many as any of the other 13 administrative parishes in the country.

Been to Jamaica once. (Montego Bay in fact.)

Will never go back. End of story.

There's far better places out there with much better beaches and far less dangerous.

I have been mulling over the idea of a return visit to Negril.
The beaches there are amazing.
The issue is that you have to fly into Montego Bay.

I went to Negril twice...I liked it. I wouldn't go to Montego Bay its too commercial. On the way to Negril from Montego with the taxi we picked up to young stunners going to work at Hedonism, the driver told us they were SP.

Hmm...lot's of cheap flights going to Philippines and Thailand....nice beaches in the Philippines and it's always summer.

You'd be very hard pressed to find much better beaches elsewhere.

You've been Montego Bay. Congrats, you've seen/experienced all of Jamaica.

MONTEGO BAY, St James — The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has reported that the state of public emergency that was imposed on the western parish of St James last Thursday is achieving the desired results.

“After the first 48 hours of the announcement of the state of emergency we have already seen encouraging results,” JDF Colonel Daniel Pryce told a press briefing at the JDF's Burke Barracks in Montego Bay yesterday.

“On Thursday we seized one Kalashnikov rifle and six live rounds in Flanker, Montego Bay. We suspect that the high- powered weapon was used in one of the recent brazen murders that would have taken place in Montego Bay over the past few weeks. That weapon is to undergo ballistic and forensic testing to determine its history.”

He added that also on Thursday, eight members of the “dangerous” Sparta gang, who were wanted for murders or in connections with shooting crimes, were arrested.

The JDF colonel also told members of the media that on Friday, 15 individuals were arrested in connection with the illegal purchase and sale of illegal petrol in the Freeport area of Montego Bay.

“Over 5,000 litres of diesel and petrol, which was being sold from five illegal makeshift petrol distribution points, were also seized in the operation,” he said.

The colonel added that in the meantime, target operations, which include vehicle checkpoints, cordons and searches, patrols and snap raids, continue to put pressure on gangs “as we pledge to take back St James”

How was the snorkeling there? as in right off the beach? I'm not a sun bather so while the SO and daughter are on the beach I like to get into the water and snorkel. I don't need stunning reefs to keep me entertained just something to get into. Worst beach (for me) that I've seen is Cayo Santa Maria. Pure white powder sand which continued as far as you wanted to go in the water. Boring AF... except for a stare down I had with a 4-5 ft. barracuda.

I've been in Montego Bay not that long ago actually and loved the Jamaican people (and food!), which is why we are looking at Negril. Isla Mujeres might be a little higher on the priority list though.
