You'd have to be a moron to run a business and not expect wages to go up. The fact that it was by the government should not be a shock as it has happened before. If you study ecomomics without considering the effects of government you really aren't studying ecomomics.
Unless you study voodoo economics your point is quite ridiculous
Ontario had the LARGEST wage increase in any province at any time. Ever.

Ontario already had the highest minimum wage (excluding AB & Territories) in Canada so this new spike is an absurdly high one.

Actually the point is correct. Fact is we have lived in a bubble where some prices/wages have stayed the same while others have spiked, resulting in an increased cost of living. $10/hour 10 years ago doesn't go as far as $10/hour today. Minimum wage should have gradually increased in small increments over the years. This is a failure of government. The current one has finally done something about it.

Now, going after small businesses who are affected by the huge spike is also a misstep - most of us can see it for what it is - pandering to the electorate. With an election around the corner, it looks good to stand up for the little guy.

Most provinces tie increase in min wage to consumer price index
Only in ON and AB has there been this massive increase (and both provinces are being run by ultra left wingers)

Oh one more thing to poke a huge hole into your balloon
Ever notice the provinces with the highest minimum wages are also the have-nots?

They raise min wage, then need to get transfer payments from the more fiscally successful provinces
The fact that 2 of the most densely populated and ostensibly business oriented provinces can not manage their finances should tell you something

Imagine if The Bank of Canada raises interest rates by 2.5% on Wednesday. But hey people should expect that. Rates have been exceptionally low for years. And if you can't afford the new mortgage payment, well you shouldn't be living in a house anyway.

The flaw in your example is the timing. If the Bank of Canada changes the rate in 2 days by that much, it'll be a shock to all. So they wouldn't do it, at least bumping it by that amount. They would do it over time. Same thing with the wage increase - should have been done over time. However, there has been ample warning and time for companies to figure things out. The rise in the minimum wage has been known for a long time now.

At no point did I say they should raise prices in advance.
You'd have to be a moron to expect wages to artificially "go up" by 30%,...

And has never gone up by 30% before.

But I get your point,... business should have realised that there was a Fiberal running the province,... so all economic sense goes out the window,... so business should have prepared for Fiberal vote buying.

And actually,...You did say that business should plan for wage increases,... to which increasing prices,... is a solution.

Your last point about "studying economics",... should be qualified by considering whether or not the Fiberals on in power.

And to keep you up to date,... private day care costs to parents' just went up by 22%,... but I guess they also should have budgeted for the Fiberals being in power.

Didnt that happen the US not too long ago?

Which is why lending policies have changed.

You would sound much smarter if you said the exact same things without constantly saying fiberal and granny.

NO ONE should plan their budget without allowing for future ce changes.

The amount is not my issue. Yes 30 percent is a shock.

But an upcoming raise in minimum wage is not.

Anyways. Not suggesting 30 per cent should have been predicted. Nor is it necesssroly a good idea.

Just pointing out that hsving no plans to accountfor pay increases is not a good plan as they are inevitable.

I've proved to be much smarter on all my posts.

And wrong again,... NO ONE should have to plan their budget for a 30% increase,...

But hopefully the Fiberals don't get elected again,... so the general public won't have to pay for Fiberal vote buying again.

The other parties are no different.....they all buy votes.

Excluding the NDP,... they are just too obvious.

Really! A long time! Most business plan at least a year in advance if not more. There was a scheduled wage increase for October 1, 2007, which took place. But Wynne announced on May 30 that that the minimum wage would increase again Jan. 1,2018. That is just seven months notice and follows the other increase by three months. It was passed into law Nov. 22, 2017, five weeks before it took effect. Hardly ample time for such a large increase.

30% is a huge sticker shock
Esp since most of these employers are using min wage to keep costs down

How come someone in ON requires $14/$15 per hour but the same person in QC is ok with $11?
ON & AB minimum wages are absurd compared to every other province at this point and hiking the rate in a time of economic uncertainty is even worse

I think we'll agree to disagree on what is considered reasonable. It wasn't a month. Most companies budget around August/September for the following year so it's not like the new information couldn't have been incorporated. And I've been in enough budget meetings to know most businesses take the time to plan for certain scenarios and likelihoods. The plan for wage increases has been known for some time, much before it was officially announced and passed into law. I recall talking about it prior to May.

The other thing is there's many businesses that are affected, and there's many businesses that are not affected (I'm talking directly about payroll). There's a large number of companies where the minimum starting salary is well above minimum wage. So the only thing that may increase are some expense lines for other services.

I think I've said this before but there are a few well-managed companies that have the right number of employees to get the job done and make a fair profit for the owners. Unfortunately there's limited growth on the revenue side so the payroll hike will cause a major issue for these types of SMB's.

Have you been to QC? Do you know how much things like beer cost? Do you know how much university costs? I cannot speak to the exact cost of living/taxation but many things in QC price-wise are significantly lower than in ON. QC universities have some of if not the lowest tuition fees in Canada. So living there doesn't cost as much as living in ON. My cousin lives in a 1 bedroom condo in Montreal and pays $200-300 less per month than I do for a condo in Mississauga. So please find out the cost of living in each province so you can compare apples to apples.
