They mentioned that a call was made by an unidentified person.

Probably wrong but maybe it isn't murder but drug overdose and the third person there freaked out and ran away after calling.

I doubt some big pharma competitor decided to put a hit out on them. If it was a murder odds are it's something more common like love triangle, marital problems etc. Also, if it was murder wouldn't that have been fairly obvious rather than suspicious?

This is really strange.

I'm not sure I'm buying the murder/suicide explanation

Who remembers Robert Maxwell?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Maxwell

He drowned off his yacht in 1991. There was no one around when he went over, so he was either pushed, or he fell, or he jumped.
Subsequent financial investigation of his firms revealed he was stealing from one to prop up another, and the net was closing in on him, and he knew it. So the ruling was that he committed suicide.

I also remember just after I moved to Toronto, there was an article in the paper about a guy who clubbed himself to death (honestly) in his car one night, and subsequent investigation of the drug store he owned showed that it was deep in the red.

So stay tuned. Maybe we'll learn something about Apotex.

I think its time to get budplug and canadaman to start the investigation.
They'll have it cleared up in no time.
I would put my $$$ on Big Sleazy finding the vast international conspiracy that did this and many, many other heinous crimes.

So now the police have disclosed that they are, indeed, looking into this as a murder/suicide. Apparently the theory is that Sherman killed his wife, hung her body from the railing of their indoor pool, then hung himself. No note. So incredibly bizarre and tragic. What would compel somebody to do something like this and leave no explanation? They just had another grandchild, they were about to list their house (having purchased a larger house in Forest Hill) and would seem to have everything to live for.

You can orchestrate a suicide with the threat of something more fearful (i.e., we have a guy tailing your child and their family. Failure to comply will result in their murders). In this day and age you can show video evidence to establish you mean business.

I suspect the Sherman's were coerced into suicide. I would examine the video surveillance tapes very carefully if they exist to see if they were doctored and not the originals.

There is a fascinating older article about the man known as Barry Sherman in the Globe and Mail. (It's from 2007 and the G&M has linked the recent story to it. I read it this morning.)

It does not (in my opinion) paint a very flattering picture of the guy. Not one bit.

My opinion (in reading that story) is that while he was brilliant and an over achiever, he was also a narcissist and a Class A control freak. At the time of writing, he and or his company had over 100 lawsuits going on at the same time. He'd supposedly buy his cousins (that are now suing him) houses, only to take the houses back later. Obviously, he bought a house and let the cousin live in it so long as the cousin towed the Barry Sherman law. Not a good way to win over friends.

I can only imagine that the old girl grew tired of his ways and wanted out (the house on the bridle path was for sale). She wanted half of everything and he thought otherwise. With guys like him, it's all about him, his money, his control and damn you if you think otherwise. Plus, there is cash in the bank and there is wealth. Two vastly different things. He was by all appearance quite wealthy. But lets face it, you can be wealthy, but the reality is that it's tied up, you are in big debt and you have little to no money. Things aren't always as rosy as they seem.

2 very interesting motives and a perfect recipe for suicide/murder scenario. We can't blame this one on the butler

I thought it was murder suicide from the start. The fact the house was for sale, and new house was under her name tells me something was going. There were no signs of forced entry into the house either. Just seems like he couldn't handle an upcoming split.
