I think the organizers of this black students only graduation ceremony are failing to see the bigger picture. By singling themselves out they are essentially saying that they deserve special recognition for the achievement of graduating university. That their experience was somehow more challenging than what Caucasian, Asian or Indian students faced. In fact what they are doing is disrespecting themselves and are actually fighting against inclusiveness and true equality.
Exactly.
If people don't want to be singled out and excluded, then don't do yourself.
Then again the media is a big part of it sticking their nose into things, or awarding someone a special prize.
For example, in sports the first black guy to play any sport is always awarded and singled out as some kind of superman. But when was the last time you saw an Asian, Indian or Latino athlete get recognized in the same way? Never.
It's a weird thing, but since I'm not Black I guess I won't get it. But if I was an athlete and someone wanted to award me a special prize for becoming the first black guy, I would be like "So what? You want to give me an award like I'm a retard and I now should feel special being with white guys?"
Sounds patronizing to me, but I guess many minorities love the recognition.
