What the hell was the CEO of MetCap thinking? Better yet, what the hell was the protester thinking by standing in front of a truck? The protesters definitely have a point that the rent increases are out of line in light of repairs not being done.
How exactly does repair not being completed equate to an ability to withhold rent?
Common sense tells me that the repairs not being done are due to rent being artificially low and higher than expected bad debt (due to people not paying for every little excuse)

I agree with you, but how does withholding rent equate to running somebody down with a truck? Common Sense tells me that a financial dispute doesn't justify assault with a weapon.

It looks to me like the skumbag was impeding the truck and the driver took matters into his own hands and moved the obstructing piece of garbage out of the way by stepping on the accelerator

Remember this video? The douchebag never thought the driver would run him over.

I agree with CC, as the driver started to drive away, there were no protesters directly in front of vehicle. Dumbass protester decided to step in front of vehicle that was already moving.
Not driver's fault if dumbass sustained any injuries.

It is the driver's fault if after he was aware the guy was there he didn't stop. If someone leaps out unexpectedly you might not realize to stop in time but that doesn't seem to be what happened here.

The paid protester scumbag who deserves a nobody beating was beginning to damage his car has anyone experienced this before someone dents ur car with their foot, and he was a violent physical threat to the drivers safety having trespassed on the car the drivers property. I hope theyll let us know the next time they protest so we can confront them on the street. If I was there and he knocked the paid protestor out I didnt see nothin. I would make sure to give my name to the driver and witness for him in court.

Then I'd have to question the business practices of Met Cap for allegedly not keeping up with repairs for so long. I think we'd all be quite upset if the rent suddenly skyrockets if we were living in those conditions. Obviously, these issues have been going on for quite a while since an entire community is upset over it.

Not sure if this is true, but

“My understanding is that the threshold for them to press charges is either serious bodily harm or somebody has to be transported to the hospital. Because they deemed neither was the case here, I was given Brent Merrill’s information, which I can take to a collision reporting centre and file a report there.”

How and why should Metcap keep up with repairs in their building that has been illegally takin over by criminal harassers

It should be easier to throw bad tenants there are so many out onto the street

If it was me I'd change the locks and throw the guys luggage over the balcony onto the road

Id have a goon on staff to deal with clowns like that

Obviously you are totally clueless about Landlord-Tenant Law.
Btw, I agree that the protester had no right to jump in front of the truck, unfortunately the driver may still be found negligent.
Canadian & Ontario Law's are socialistic BS .
Time to start a rebellion back to the 'common sense revolution' .

It's the landlord's responsibility to keep up with repairs. That's part of the contract.

Threshold to press charges just means that they can't be bothered because they have other priorities, cases where somebody actually got hurt.

If the guy who fortunately wasn't hurt instead actually got run over that threshold would be met and the driver would be facing an attempted murder charge, which he'd probably plea down to assault and battery with a weapon.

Kind of depends what was going on though. If the driver reasonably feared for his life he could claim that he committed the assault for a valid self defence reason. On the other hand if he just got annoyed that a protester was blocking the road he'd be spending real time in prison.

Both are at fault.

The protester has no right to detain/block/harass a person
The driver has no right to continue driving with a person in front them.

Both have legal means to deal with each situation and both parties should have exercised those rights. Instead of acting like fools, playing games with a truck.

You guys are all either Libtards or did not read the article

METCAP WANTS TO DO THE REPAIRS
IN order to do so, the tenants needed to vacate the property for 2 days
They claim poverty so Metcap even offered them $100 to help with hotel bill (and although $100 certainly would not let them sleep in a 5 star hotel, lets be serious this is a pretty ghetto area to begin with, lots of hotels $100 can cover the 1 night stay)
The tenants want MORE money and REFUSE to vacate the property

Dude who jumped in front of the truck is a total shit disturber with no relation to the elderly couple
I personally have driven through picket lines with idiots before so I feel no remorse to idiots who try to block others vehicles

In addition to this multiple tenants are witholding rent in a sympathy protest
Which obviously means landlord wants to get these losers out asap

METCAP WANTS TO DO THE REPAIRS...
From what I understand, they are good repairing the recently renovated units that are rented at a significantly higher cost but are systematically putting longer time residents way down the waiting list.

BTW there are multi-million dollar homes a few doors down from the building in question and renovated units in those buildings are going for $1100/ month for bachelor which isn't that much cheaper than Liberty Village across the street.

The rumour of this persists but none of them have ever been proven

But in all honesty; if I owned 2 buildings I would maintain the better one first (esp if older one is withholding rent)

It's units in the same building. Tenant leaves, they do some minor renovations and jack up the rent.

Of course the only way to prove it would be to get the instructions the management company provides to supers. In the meanwhile, low rent tenants have extensive waits for basic repairs but still face over cap rent increases.

As a former landlord.... I don't do it anymore. Sold off the properties.

Here's the 10 most important tips for any of you wanting to be a landlord:

1. Only rent out nice places to people with decent jobs
2. Avoid buying cheap cruddy buildings and being a slum lord to broke losers
3. Only rent out nice places to people with decent jobs
4. Avoid buying cheap cruddy buildings and being a slum lord to broke losers

7. Only rent out nice places to people with decent jobs
8. Avoid buying cheap cruddy buildings and being a slum lord to broke losers
9. Only rent out nice places to people with decent jobs
10. Avoid buying cheap cruddy buildings and being a slum lord to broke losers

Follow the above points and it'll make your life and rental collections a lot easier.

The temptation is there to go in cheap, where you leverage your costs in hopes everything works out smoothly with lower income people.

Don't fall for it.

Spend the money and try to afford a better property to rent out. Look for young professionals who care about how they live, their credit score, and always on the go hoping to score better jobs. They are the ones who have financial aptitude and will always pay.
