Here is the story. My friend went to the TD bank. Deposited 1750 cash at the counter as his May rent. He counted 3 times before the deposit and his wife did it too. The teller counted it twice front of him with the machine and it was 1750$.
He got the printed recipe. There was a 21X20$ item = 420$. They deposited the money on his account. 8 hours later at 7 pm. he got a phone call from the TD and they told him: Sorry it was a miscounting and there were only fifteen 20$ bill. They withdraw the 120$ instantly from his account so there were not enough money for his rent. So he is ran for an other TD bank what was open until 8pm and deposited enough cash to cover his rent.
It just doesn't make any sense. I can believe maybe they miscounting 1 twenty dollar bill but six?? Come on!!
Just not possible. He checked the money, his wife checked the money, the teller checked it twice. He got the recipe where is the money listed. How many 5,10,20,50 and 100$ bill was there. The total was 1750$. Today morning he went to the bank and they show an other recipe what is show only 15X20$ bill. They told him after the bank closed, they recounted the all deposited money and only 15 pieces of 20$ was there and showed him the recipe from he recounting bills. So what he can do? They don't show him the security record or any evidence just told him technically : "fuck off". My friend want to go to the police and report a theft under 5000. Then they have to show the record for the police officer. Very sad if someone has a sticky fingers in the bank and my friend and I don't know how many clients in the past has to pay for it??
If I go to the bank and they give me 120$ less what I withdraw, can I go back 8 hour later and tell them: Hey I recounted the bills and 120$ less. Give me that 120 right now. I think they will kick me out. So anyone who had an advice I'm glad to hear it. Thanks!

If he's got the receipt, he should go see the manager. I would think the receipt is essentially a legal document where the bank verified the contents. I have the strong suspicion that the manager will make it right.

If he has a receipt showing 21x $20 = $420, then the Bank has acknowledged receipt of that amount. Period.

He can make an official complaint through the TD's process, all the way to their Ombudsman.

https://www.td.com/to-our-customers/resolving-your-problems/comments.jsp

He can also bring a Small Claims Court action for the amount, plus his filing fees etc. THAT will get his money back. The bank ain't even gonna file a Statement of Defence over $400.

Maybe the bank can review the security camera to verify your friend depositing the full amount.

He went the manager today morning. He said : we will call you shortly. He is still waiting! :) And the 120$ is not redeposited to his account.

I think your friend has to be more firm with this manager.
Polite, professional, yet firm. Very firm.

It was my friend really. It's not me. If it's me I tell you it's me. :) And he is patient, polite, but a pitbull. So I'm sure he will go after it. I'm really curious. The police will open a case if he report it? Maybe better if they stop finally this five finger discount worker.

BMO tried to pull the same shit with me.
As silly as it sounds , the receipt actually is not proof, if the teller made a mistake on the receipt they can amend it accordingly.

In my case I had them pull the security footage, which was in high definition and they could zoom in on the cash being counted. Every note was accounted for and my account was fixed with the correct amount. No apology for wasting my time of course. Havent been back to that branch since

How they're able to just "edit" a transaction without any internal investigation is beyond comprehension.
I wasn't even contacted , they just made the change and I noticed the rogue entry in my account a week later.
Just another example of big corporations bullying their customers.

He deposited at the counter as I wrote, and the teller counted twice.
This must be hard for cash businesses when you can't trust the bank.

Anyway, banks are "encouraging" more and more people to use ATM's instead of human tellers.

What type of branch was it? If it's a central drop, something went wrong with the teller or the person in the cash room. If they have deposit machines then they would have found out right there.

Either way, the customer and CSR confirmed the amount. Their issue, not yours. Don't let them play and misguide you, it's the branch's loss.

If that were the case they would be saying so and they would be calling the police and turning over the counterfeit bills. They would not call it a miscount. Indeed they would likely be casting suspicion on the depositor who came with the fake money.

Since they AREN'T doing that you can be sure that's not what happened.

OP: inform the branch you believe a crime was committed and tell them to preserve the evidence such as the video, then contact the police.

I had the same trouble with TD on several occasions. In my case, it wasn't cash, but cheques that were deposited. I always double check the amount that I plan on depositing, and I always insist on a receipt of the transaction. On these occasions, a withdrawal would come from my account and when I followed up I was informed that there were not 7 cheques as the receipt verified, but only 6. I told them that I had a receipt confirming the number of cheques and the total amount, but they basically told me to piss off, at which point I went postal on these pricks. It took a lot of standing my ground, but eventually the money was retunred to my account. On one occasion, they "found the missing cheque" and gold me that a gift card would be sent to make it up to me. Needless to say, it never came.

These guys have all the power and apparently your receipt has no value. In any other retail transaction the receipt is all the proof that you need, but not at the banks. I often wonder if a teller was skimming cheques and depositing them into their own account. I only had problems at that one branch, so I told them to investigate if it was the same teller who was having these issues. I doubt they even cared.

I agree with Iris. If I go to my bank and tell them that I was short changed on a cash withdrawal and they did not give me the correct amount, they won't correct the situation. It's a one way street with these guys. In my mind, when I'm at the counter and the transaction is complete and I walk out with a receipt, that should be final, like any other business transaction...

you are wrong - like I said earlier - the receipt is the receipt - the only exception would be if some of the bills deposited turned out to be counterfeit

And they don't corrected the amount let's say -120$ (correction) with red ink on the statement as they do sometimes , they just change the amount of the original deposit. So it was 1750$ in the morning and he checked the statement after the phone call , it shows the deposit was 1630$ only. The statement, don't show the 1750$ original deposit so no evidence about it. I don't know who has the power in the branch to change the deposited amount after the customer leave, but something is very fishy. He will go to the police today, and send a mail for the customer care and the TD ombudsman. And thank you guys for the advices. :)

I agree. This should be reported to the police. If your friend is firm in his position, the only possible explanation is that the teller scammed the cash, or they made a posting error after issuing the receipt. I don't care if they are a huge corporation with lots of power, they need to be held to account. Even if there was an error on the part of your friend, I have to believe that when I walk out of a business with a receipt, it's a confirmation of what has been transacted. It's my only proof of what took place.

In my case, I told them that if there was a cheque missing from my deposit, that was their problem. If they post it incorrectly or lose the cheque, that's unfortunate, but it's their problem, not mine. I have no control over what they do or fail to do once I walk out the door...
