A tragedy of epic proportions, Russian commercial flight safety standards are a joke.

I have their recording of Rachmaninov's Vespers, no other choir could hit those low g's like they could. Female singers included.

These musicians were on their way to Syria to encourage Russian troops bombing Aleppo.

Somehow I can't help but think of Dostoevsky quote: "I absolutely renounce all higher harmony. It is not worth one little tear of even that one tormented child".

Russia has not ruled out terrorism. Maybe KKK, white supremacists, Timothy McVeigh, Neo-nazis, UDA, Ukrainians, Syrian refugees, Daesh, etc.? Russia has no shortage of enemies.

The black boxes have been recovered which should shed some light as to what happened, but at this point it could have been anything.

Usually when there is a mechanical problem, there is still enough time to send an SOS (save our skin). Was an SOS ever sent?

Also, even a crippled plane might still be able to land on water. Sullenberger did it on the Hudson a few years ago. Not sure if Russian pilots have the skill level of a German American pilot.

At least according to this initial report it is looking like a problem with the flaps.

We will have to see if the flight data recorder confirms this.

" ...Speed 300... (not clear)

- (not clear)

- Stands are off, commander

- (not clear)

- Oh ouch!

A sharp alarm signal

- The flaps, b***h, what the f***!

- Altimeter!

- We are... (not clear)

- Ground Proximity Warning alarm sounds

- Not clear

- We are falling, commander!

EOR"

It looks less and less likely that Daesh was responsible. Normally, they are quick to claim credit (blame?) when they kill people.

Either a technical issue or misconfigured for takeoff. i.e forgot the flaps. Most planes warn of this but I am not sure if this older Soviet plane had takeoff config alarm.

I doubt even Sully could have pulled it off at night.

Russia said no evidence of a bomb found.

Won't rule out an intentional act by the pilot(s).

The rumours say that the flaps did not work in sync, which would have caused loss of control. If only flaps on one wing retracted, the plane would turn over.

Yes or if they retracted out of sync that is also game over. They have recovered the FDR so I suppose we will know soon. I suspect more a misconfig as the plane did not get far at all before it went down. Or one of the flaps did not deploy but that would set of an alarm I would expect.

I'm not saying the people working at Charlie Hebdo should have been gunned down, but man.... I got to say they don't seem to make themselves likeable. And they wonder why some people want to take a shot at them.

I think just about every newspaper has a cartoonist doing jokes about everyday events or the local politician (fat sweaty Rob Ford every week in the Toronto Sun), but it gets to a point where a line is crossed between satirical goofy comics and hardnosed clickbait viewpoints.

I guess it works. Charlie Hebdo has been around forever and French people love the publication no matter how dumb the main comic is.

You'd think after most of their office was creamed, they'd chill out, but I guess not. Sales and PR matter most.

Lucky for them, France is 1,000s of miles away so exposure to angry mob of Russians and Mid East people is still limited. I bet any money that if Charlie Hebdo was right in the heat of that Russian/Mid East region where someone can barge down their door every 5 minutes, they'd have zero balls to keep churning out Charlie Hebdo cartoons.
