I haven't been to the US in over 20 years. About 18 years ago in my younger stupid days, I was charged with fraud. They said it would be espunged from my record. I'm aiming a trip to Vegas in the new year, is there anyway I can check to see if I'm gonna have a problem entering the states before I put time and effort into the planning.

Here's what I would do... If you have friend/brother that you look similar to book the ticket in their name and use their passport. Problem solved.

Go to a police station and pay for a background check. Costs about $40?

You were charged with fraud, but what was the outcome?

Ask your lawyer that you dealt with when you were charged. Not sure if you can,but maybe try contacting the US border service and see what they say

check the us customs website. crimes of moral turpitude are an instant no passage across the boarder dependent on the boarder guard at the time of inspection.

any canadian pardons are NOT recognized by the US and will be disregarded. however if they do deny you passage most likely you can get a waiver(cash grab off 600 US) as long as they has been sufficient time from the occurrence and no new criminal activity since.

Im not 100% sure if US custom can see sealed and pardoned activity in their system for checking.

You said you were charged...there is no problem with that. Were you convicted? Conviction is what US looks at. Is so, were you given a discharge period or probation? With a probation, there is no conviction recorded assuming you don't get caught for any criminal activity during the probation, then you would get double hammered for new charge and the probationary charge. Once the probation is served without incident, the charge should disappear.

There are pardon services that can check to see if your records were sealed or purged and if purgeable, make sure they are.

For a fee off course. Like X coppers for traffic tickets I suppose.

I was charged and had to pay back the money. Had to stay out of trouble for a year. Haven't been in trouble since then. They said it was going to be expunged off my record. I'll go get a criminal record check and see what pops up.

This is terrible advice. If US Customs catches you doing this you will be arrested and charged with a felony and banned from entering the US.

There are so many people that do it. Very slim chance of getting caught IMHO.

This might be the dumbest advice I have ever read on terb.. and there has been plenty of really dumb advice here over the years.

How dumb can it be if it has a 100% success rate? Don't know anyone that's ever been caught! You give American's too much credit.

If you get probation the conviction still shows on your record. I know because I had one.

If you had a criminal record in Canada and have never tried to cross the US border but obtained a Canadian pardon, it will not show up when you do cross. If you had a record and were refused entry to the US it doesn't matter if you have a pardon or not, you will always be in their system and will need a waiver.

You are going to Vegas, so I can tell you are a player...
So here's an equally good suggestion: if your friend/brother does NOT look like you, then just borrow his passport and tape your photograph on top of his... Try it. Those machines at the airport that scan your passport, they can't tell the difference.
Then when you walk up to the US border agent fold a nice crisp $50 bill into your passport and hand it to him with a little wink... You're guaranteed to be on your way!
