I've been very sick for the last week. I mean absolutely miserable.

It started with diarrhea, then sneezing and coughing, extreme fatigue and weakness, lots of phlegm, chills, fever. For the last three days I have been so weak I can hardly get up. I have been in bed most of the time, and at times have felt close to death (no exagerration).

I was offered a free flu shots several weeks ago, but passed on it. Then, just before the day I started showing symptoms, wised up and got it. But by that time, I felt kind of sick already.

Flu shots only protect against last year's strain, but still reduce the risk of getting the flu by almost 50%.

They don't hurt at all, and if it will save you from missing work and getting fired, or just feeling miserable, then it's worth it.

Normally I would advise against it citing 9/11 style cover-ups and alien invasions .. I hate waiting for the shots to arrive so the more paranoia the better but I got mine so - I recommend them. My brother and SO avoids them and they are always getting more often than me during the winter. It's quick needle and you have nothing to lose.

The average healthy adult will survive the average flu. However, the average healthy adult is also in contact with others who would not: the very young, the elderly, asthmatics, and those already weakened by another condition. Even if you are an average healthy adult you don't want to be the vector the disease takes to kill someone you know who is less able to fight it off.

I had the flu once, 25-30 years ago and had similar symptoms the OP described. I honestly thought I was going to die. It was brutal. I've had the flu shot every year since, but never had the flu again. Coincidence? Maybe, but I don't see a down side to getting it.

It may not kill you if you're healthy, but it certainly sends a lot of people to hospital and kills hundreds of older people every year. The flu is not a cold.

Had the flu in April and spent 6 days in hospital. Had pneumonia along with it. That's the first time for me but I still don't get the flu shot.

Between spending 6 days in the hospital (you would have died if there was not modern medicine) and driving "commercially" for 37 years and STILL not seeing any value in winter tires, you sure are an obstinate one! Or should I say pig headed?!?! (Just having fun with you pal)

Aside from Jenny McCarthy-type anti-vaxxers, there really is no reason not to and many, many reasons to get the flu shot. Doesn't cost you a dime and can protect you from getting real fucking sick.

I've been getting the flu shot for decades. I get every vaccine I hear of and I can't remember the last time I ever got sick with anything except a common cold or a sore throat (strep-self limiting). Personally, I have never had any adverse reaction to any vaccine and don't know anyone who has. Yes, there are some people who have had bad reactions to vaccinations but they are few and far between.

Beyond a slightly sore arm and the one in a million chance of a severe negative reaction.

I got mine and it sucked this year. The flu went through my work last week and not being sick, I've been spending way too many hours covering the load.

2,000 - 8,000 Canadians die from the flu every year. Compare that to 600 or so murders per year.

I have survived this long with my "Pig Headed" ways and plan on being around for a long time yet. April was the first time I was ever in hospital for influenza or had influenza for that matter. Had colds before but that's all.
