I'm glad your friend didn't become another depressing murder statistic. It's not that there's an increase in violent Johns per se, but the sadistic bastards have always existed. While I'd like to think that the majority of us men that frequent the industry are harmless perverts that just want a little erotic fun with an attractive fantasy lady, there are some men out there that are irredeemable, twisted, and incapable of getting a woman to like them. They in turn become angry, bitter and violent towards women, and their chosen recourse is to try and take it out on people that can't defend themselves, like providers whom the law forces to operate in the shadows.
It's always good to screen new clients. Though, sometimes, even regular clients can change over time into jerks. And that itself can be harder to gauge, depending on how much the SP is familiar with that client and is in tune enough to notice in the short window she meets up with the client but before they get it on. It's not easy to be on constant vigilance during something which requires the SP to relax in a certain way.

I wish that agencies screened. While in Toronto, I worked for an agency that I did outcalls. They did not screen. I was pissed. I remember yelling at the agency owner (who is likely a member of this board) infront of another girl in his car that it was me that was risking my life whenever I walked into a hotel room or opened a door. Not him. To be honest, I would say that most (not all) agencies in Toronto are run by people that have shady real lives, and really don't have any business skills whatsoever.
Actually, after having so many shitty backpage experiences over the past few months, I have started using agencies exclusively. It is so refreshing finally dealing with professional SP's instead of the indy's that care little to nothing about customer satisfaction. I would never provide references to see an SP unless she was super, super hot. Some of us have personal lives which, just like SP's, we should be entitled to keep private.

Your shitty experiences with BP indies is no reflection on reputable and upscale indies. Caveat emptor and 'you get what you pay for' applies when dealing with BP, generally-speaking, although if you cherry pick on BP, you will see that some reputable and upscale indies advertise there too.
