Here's an article from 2009 talking about why Syria supported the Iraqi insurgency. Note back in those days it was common for US special forces to strike across the border into Syria to destroy training camps and kill insurgent leaders.

Note that this article PREDICTED that Syrian fighters who had been armed by Assad upon returning from Iraq would become a problem for Assad.

In case you are too brain-dead to recognize the significance of that being written in 2009, that was TWO YEARS before the Syrian civil war began, and it literally predicted Aleppo. Explicitly. Based on Assad funding and arming the very people he is now fighting there.

They supply weapons to the region. Once out of their hands they have no control where they end up.

That's one of the mistakes made over and over. Weapons can and will be sold to the highest bidders. It's the intermediaries that are the issue.

The US supported some Mujahadin groups and some of those people may have later joined AQ.
