logo has a red skin indian

they are called redskin because the first Indians the white man met in Newfoundland wore red pigment

Indians do not have red skin

the original red skins (Beothuk) from newfoundland were wiped out

During spring, the Beothuk used red ochre to paint not only their bodies, but also their houses, canoes, weapons, household appliances and musical instruments. This practice led Europeans to refer to them as "Red Indians". The use of ochre had great cultural significance. The decorating was done during an annual multi-day spring celebration. It designated tribal identity; for example, decorating newborn children was a way to welcome them into the tribe. Forbidding a person to wear ochre was a form of punishment.

It is up to Indians to decide if logo is offensive, not the white man

How about the "Cleveland Darkies" with this as a logo

Erected by the city of Natchitoches in grateful recognition of the arduous and faithful services of the good darkies of Louisiana.

I agree.

And the word I've heard is that they are offended.
Scrap 'em.

(by the way, 'Indian' is borderline these days. some like it, some find it offensive)

I'm not native, so I have know idea how it effects them.

But I would take it as a compliment,...who would call their team the Pasadena Pussies, or the Winnipeg Wusses,...???

FAST

Neither am I, and I also think that it's a compliment in certain cases. "Braves" is a compliment is it not? "Red Skins" maybe not. Cleveland Indians suggests some kind of pride in the indigenous settlers?

I should've known that, and maybe I forgot the reason, but thank you for explaining it again. I can understand the objection to that term.

Thanks for this again Yoga.

But it couldn't just be the 'Indians' from Newfoundland. Surely, other tribes south of the border wore red paint, no? (I also thought 'redskins' was referring to painted faces, etc., although maybe some had varying skin tones based on genetics and climate).

Named for Louis Sockalexis a star player for the teams previous incarnation. The title of Indians was the choice of the Cleveland sports reporters in 1915, it having been a nickname applied to the Cleveland Spiders during the three seasons Louis Sockalexis, a member of the Penobscot Nation, played in Cleveland.

To my mind, it isn't so much the name, as it is the disrespectful logo.

I see. Very interesting. Thank you for the history lesson. The logo is not complimenting. Perhaps a portrait of Louis Sockalexis? That would be great.

Considering Canada still has an "Indian Act" we should be working on higher level issues than sports team logos

I have no problem with the Chicago Black Hawks logo and name, which isn't derogatory. But the name "Chief Wahoo"??!!

as long as their are some offended aboriginals then it should be scrapped.

replace atlanta brave tomahawl chop with your best african spear chucker imitation and see how people would react.

for me redskin and indian are offensive.

brave and blackhawk seems okay but it is not for me to say as i am not native.

the real question is what harm would come to cleveland for picking a new mascot? would old school fans follow a different team?

If this is such an important and pressing issue, why did it not come up until the playoffs? I believe Cleveland and Toronto play each other during the regular season as well. Must not have been that important a few months ago I guess.

I always looked at it like it is their city so tribute the team name as a reminder to never forget the founders of the land. It was never meant to be an offensive message.

If you don't believe the last is racist and the others are, reflect on your double standard.
I wouldn't look at this example as a double standard, the word jews are racial slurs and chinamen are not the founders. The cities dont naturally belong to them. Indian isnt a racial slur and it is in fact their city.

Some people like me look at naming a cities team after a race that are not the founders would be in comparison of removing a home owners name from their mail box and replacing it with my own. Cities never name their teams after a mockery or something that is considered weak, the team names symbolize strength and or a piece of a cities foundation that the people are proud of.

This whole thing is complete bullshit.

The only time this comes to the forefront by the "so called" offended is when a team makes it to the playoffs. The people that spearhead these protests are attention seekers! Where were they the rest of the season?!?! The same thing happened in 92, when the Braves came to town...

Get over it.. Its just the nickname of a sports team that's been around for decades. Why all of a sudden is it an issue now?

The bigger issue here is how do the "Jays" avoid getting completely SCALPED By the "Indians"!
