Sufism became an integral part of the Arab Golden Age with Baghdad and Cordoba becoming the centers of learning. They had a passion for knowledge and preserved Greco-Roman manuscripts. Unfortunately the Mongols had other ideas and in the late 13th Century Baghdad ceased to exist. It was rebuilt after the Egyptian counter offensive but never regained it's former glory. It thrived in India but the conquering Mughals of Afghanistan persecuted them. Then it took hold in Ottoman Istanbul and a new centre of knowledge was established at Timbiktu. Unfortunately once the Ottoman Turks started losing wars the Sufis lost their influence.

Today their is only one country where Sufis are in the majority: Senegal.
