Very encouraging result on the beach volleyball front. The Canadians were going against the Italians in both genders. The Canuck men lost but the women won - a big upset!

Canadians are at a disadvantage when it comes to beach volleyball. To be able to compete Canadians have to move to California, Italians train on the islands year round.

Question: Aren't swimmers suppose to shave their body hair so they can swim faster but I notice our female swimmers have medium to long hair?

Big test today for the women's soccer Nationals, they play Germany at 3:00PM. Janine Beckie is the leading scorer of the tournament, so far.

Who's the sexiest Olympian, Melissa Bishop with her girl-next-door good looks gets lots of votes.

Tania Cagnotto is right up there with her.

Canada 2 Germany 1

Two firsts for Canada. The first time they've beaten Germany in 12 attempts and the first time Canada has won their group. And they did it without their best players Sinclair, Beckie (rested), Buchanan (red card). As Rick Jianneret would say, "this team is scary good".

Woman of the match: Melissa Tancredi.

My Roman paisana scored a brace and snuffed out most of the German crosses into the Canadian goal. Honourable mention goaltender Stephanie Lavey, strong and brave in defense. Putting her body on the line to make crucial saves.

Well done ladies!

Human interest story. Jen Kish and her sister were raised by a single father who worked two jobs. He contracted cancer but is well enough to make the trip to Brazil to watch Jen in person.

Another bronze for 10m synchro diving by the ladies. All medals by the ladies. IIRC it was similar results in 2012 London.

Diana Matheson is a sweet girl - off the pitch. And she makes a great deal of sense. Up to this Olympic Games, Danada has gotten through on hockey style grit and work ethic. The younger players coming in are of a much higher skill level. One of the hardest positions to develop is a midfield distributor, in Ashley Lawrence Canada finally has one. And, like Buchanan, she's a product of the Vaughan Azzurri.

Unfortunately this is Matheson's last International.

Beckie (no. 19) looks amazing when she smiles, our next goal poaching superstar. She is a product of Texas Tech University, setting the school record for goals with 57.

Friday Aug 12: Canada vs France. If they win they are guaranteed a medal.

Almost, 3/4 teams that win Friday will collect a medal. I like Canada's chances.

Cdn ladies win another bronze in the 4x200 relay swim, and 3rd medal for Penny Oleksiak! The race was led by the two 16 year olds, Penny O and Talyor Ruck, both over 6 feet tall.

Penny was actually pretty close to chasing down the mighty Aussies for silver. And she has two more good chances at medals ; she qualified 2nd in the 100m free and the Cdns have a really good team in the 4x100 medley relay.

If she wins 4-5 medals, wow, we have a new Olympic legend. She's already a star!

The gold medal was within Santo Condorelli's reach, he missed out due to youthful exuberance.

He started out flying from the block but gassed himself at the 55m mark, he started veering to the left and finished out of the medals. He will be a legitimate gold medal threat going forward.

Great race by Santo. He has a shot to medal in the 50m sprint.

She's destined to be the next Clara Hughes "Freak of Nature". I'm predicting she'll be the flag bearer at the closing games even, the idiots at CBC are gonna sugar-coat her with so much praise on closing day, just watch ;)...

Probably true, you can tell he still has that college dorm party-hardy like a rock star mentality. Give him another 4 years and I'm thinking he'll be much more focused...

GOLD! You go, Penny.

A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian, however, it appears the Oleksiaks originated from Poland which means they are very likely Catholics.
