It's just happened today. They leave message, I call them back ( Officer Hose with big indian accent...lol)
They try to threatening me about tax fraud and they will send a police officer today because I owe 900$ and I have to pay the balance within an hour. Pathetic! :)
I told for Hose maybe you eat too much indian food, and the spices made you brain dead. He hung up the phone then.
Otherwise first time when I heard the message from a 1-844 number it looks official. :) Don't eat it guys. They are scammers.

Scam has been around for a while, but people still fall for it.

There are all kinds of youtube videos where these scammers get their time wasted by their "marks"

This one is pretty funny!- "I need to call my pimp daddy"

If you find yourself believing one of these might be true, hang up and call CRA using the number on their website.

I got a call from a scammer claiming I was 6 months behind on my OSAP payments. He wanted me to pay over a thousand dollars to put my loans back in good standing, even though I had completely paid off my OSAP almost a decade ago. I told him I was occupied (it was after 10pm) and that I'd call them back the next day. He got all angry and started saying I needed to resolve it now or they would initiate court proceedings. At which point I decided it was safe to hang up, judging it 100% a scam. I didn't even bother calling OSAP.

The CRA could care less about these scams. They believe that everyone should know these things occur and to not fall for them and that the majority of the public knows about these types of scams already. There is nothing they can do either, so calling the CRA is a waste of time.

This scam is running in the US too. The IRS communicates with taxpayers via snail mail, not over the phone. Don't fall for it.

Thanks for this. I got the message as well. He called himself officer Robert William but he had an Indian accent which started ringing bells.

Me too, he left a message saying id better have my lawer ready if not good luck lol
funny thing is I thought it was a collections trying to go after some old debt I had with the bank but still didnt give a shit. Its kinda nice to know now they were a scam because I don't feel like being harassed by another collection agency for a debt that im never going to pay anyways. Statue of limitation in Ontario is only 2 years, im way beyond that point
so I like to call the SOL "shit outta luck" for collectors.

Yes, the CRA does call if it is an important issue. It should come up as the Canada Revenue Agency on the call display.
CRA scam is a lot more sneakier now the scam now spoof the caller id display from CRA agency. THey call you while your phone show the real caller id from cra agency and they claimed that i owe them money and i did not file my income tax ..lol. RIght away i knew it was fake.
I google spoofing caller id scam from cra. They leave you another different number on voice mail ( different on my voice mail to get me call back not the same as cra agency website but the caller id do show telelphone as CRA from website).
Also i filed my income tax already on time and i always get money back from cra agency every year. If i had picked the phone while they call you and would had got i scared and could had fell for it. The key i guess would be while you talking to the scammer they would not know your sin number and your income level. Try testing them out by asking them proof that they are cra agent. You should hang up and then get then go to cra website or your income tax return and phone the real cra diectly and the ask them . Also it been advertised all over CTV news cra never phone you they mail you first !!!

KEY is to hang up! Go to income tax return get the cra number and phone them and you will get a real cra agent they will ask your name and sin and once they punch in your sin number into the computer they will have all your income tax return info and your name and addresses and birthday and income level.
Always becareful of giving out SIN and personal info... make sure you never call from any number left on your voice mail.
Important to remenber dont trust your caller id now!!! They spoof caller id . GOogle caller id spoofing scam!! Caller id spoofed that link to real CRA telephone scam.

You're somewhat misinformed. Initial contact regarding an unfiled return is sometimes attempted in writing via a computer generated letter but that doesn't always happen. Part of my job is to contact people about their unfiled returns and I've had many cases where some/all of the years didn't have these requests issued. We used to issue alot more of these requests but that's been reduced as a cost saving measure. We also get many cases where the client hasn't bothered to tell us that they've moved and phone contact is our only avenue of tracking them down.

The best advice has already been given. If you're not sure that the caller is from the CRA, call us at one of our published phone numbers to verify the caller is from there.

Toronto police say they've become unwittingly linked to the Canada Revenue Agency scam.

The so-called "CRA Scam" involves victims being contacted by phone or email by callers who claim to be Canada Revenue Agency employees. The victims are told they owe money to the CRA, payment is demanded and a threat of immediate arrest is made if they don't pay.

Police say phone numbers visible on call display when the scammers call are fake or "spoofed."

Investigators say the Toronto Police Service's non-emergency number is one of the numbers being spoofed by the callers.
I would hang up on you if you had call me directly and cursed at you figured you must be a scammer! LOL. Then i would go to my tax returrn assesment and get the telephone from there and then call them back! Or go to CRA website! i think it would be safer to use the published telephone from your tax assesement or from your tax return. CRA Website can be spoofed too or get hijacked or redirected to a fake CRA website.

Just yesterday I spoke with an older couple who had been called by the CRA scammer. Same $900 demand. Cash only and wire the $ by Western Union to a certain address. We can laugh but this couple were really upset. And who is to say the scammer ever intended to receive the $ by wire? Maybe someone would be waiting outside the bank with a baseball bat or worse and ready to collect the $ directly. I think these guys are way more successful than anyone knows or they would not keep on doing this. I think a lot of seniors are the victims of all sorts of scams which never exposed.
