And let's not forget the "Global adjustment" charge which is basically the difference between the high cost and what they can get for it on the open market. What an efficiently run group.

My experience with the Global Adjustment was that it eliminated any savings I got from a fixed-price contract with a 3rd party power supplier. Never again. (In any fixed price contract, you must consider it, whether for gas or electricity).

Recently though, the GA seems to be negligible, IIRC.

The only politician that did what he campaigned and promised. I loved Harris (and the Common Sense Revolution).
Amalgamation, against the wishes of the voters.
Offloading services on the cities.
Attacks on the city of Toronto.

Nuclear power still costs us too much, but we're stuck with it.
Renewable is a small part of the costs of Hydro.

This is the only way to pay for an expensive power supply. The Pickering and Darlington nuclear plants ran over budget when first built, Pickering went over budget on the refurbishment and now the Darlington plant is to be refurbished, no doubt it will go over budget by a paltry 300 million, which is the sum they want to put into Pickering again, to keep it going until 2020.

Our beloved, honest and true leader Premier Harris had no choice to download/offload/amalgamate because the Chretien Liberals severely reduced transfer payments to this province to pay for the sins of their former leader ************ Elliot Trudeau.

(Frank, I thought Harris did a good job or did his best at the time. Some say he should not have gotten into that 407 deal, but at the time, it was worth a billion dollars, and taxpayers would not have to fund its construction. It's based on a user-pay system, which some say, is better than mismanagement by the government of a govt asset, like Ontario Hydro. Perhaps they would've imposed caps or regulatory approval for price increases. But hindsight is 20/20.)

^^^GP is right, downloading started from the top and it was brought on by the liberals.

As far as being stuck with nuclear, that's because they are myopic in their thought. When you pump billions into something you feel the need to keep it going. Couple this with the fact that Pickering and Darlington hydro employ a small city worth of employees and other outside contractors, there would be a considerable backlash and corresponding adverse affect on the economy that would be palpable.

Nice spin.

But seriously, just say you hate the Liberals. It's more credible than dreaming up elaborate rationales why everything is the Liberals' fault and Mike Harris is the saviour.

For fun, I just did some poking around on the IESO website. Interesting reading, if you have the time and inclination.

One figure that caught my eye -- last year, total demand for electricity in the province was less than it was in 1997. Year-on-year trend has been downward, and total demand is down about 13% from the peak in 2005. Bunch of reasons for that I'm sure, conservation...heavy industry leaving the province etc. But I thought that was pretty amazing. http://www.ieso.ca/Pages/Power-Data/demand.aspx

Offloading has screwed up the cities, Harris just did it so he could balance his budget.
Amalgamation was his revenge for the city continuing to vote in left of centre mayors, now the city is ruled by the 'burbs.
At the time there were mass protests against amalgamations and a referendum that said we didn't want it, but he went ahead anyways.

2 years ago our propane spiked from .65 to 1.10 in a matter of months. That was a rough year. Thank god it's back down now to .57. I'm with Hydro One as well and my bill is not less than $400-$500 a month and I'm pretty conservative. I only do laundry and use the dish washer on low-peak times or on the weekend. It's insane!! You can't win. If we use less, we pay more, if we use more, we pay more!! Something is wrong with this deal.

You're right, it's Kathleen Wynne that's all wrong.

4-500 a month? Are you operating a steel mill in your basement?

The switch to LEDs is transformational. It use to require about 250W to light the main floor of my small house. Now it requires about 20 watts w LEDs. Just a massive difference. Then you add the fact that the heat form those lights does not have to be removed by your AC in the summer, BOOM another gain, then you add the reduction in power from new TVs BOOM, these are pretty big gains.

230 WATTS for a few hrs at night is absolutely meaningless, including your BS about saving on air conditioning,... when the opposite is true, to a benefit in the winter, when lights are on much longer.

Anything using electricity as a form of heat, like toaster ovens, kettles, ranges, clothes driers etc, will consume the difference between led and incandescent bulbs,... in seconds, not hrs.

But lets not deal in reality.

Granny will end up using natural gas to generate electricity to heat houses, which means a loss of efficiency,... because of the energy conversion and transmission loses, instead of using natural gas to create heat directly.

Yep,...sounds like a Fiberal plan.

I believe the link between the loss of industry, conservation and being more conscious of when we use electricity has been the reason why rates have risen. The OEB seems to increase rates whenever they please, not regulate like they should, but whenever they see a loss of revenue.

Frankfooter...you may want to do some research on this. Downloading started from the federal level to the provinces. The natural progression was to the municipalities.

Regardless of this, how does this have anything to do with the Hydro rates going up now?
