SP’s and some MP’s require appointments be made by phone or text. Having a work phone I realize I need a separate phone and number. Can you suggest where I can purchase an inexpensive phone and a talk/text plan? I don’t need anything fancy.

Main advantage of Speakout: Money loaded is valid for 365 days. So the 25 bucks go a long way. Also, on the Rogers network, so fairly reliable

+1 on speakout. Also, get the USD$30 Lumia 640 phone from Bestbuy.com. Unlock is free provided by AT&T.

Pay cash and there is no record anywhere.

Good to remember when you decide you need to make crack to pay for the hobby.
Good luck, Walt.

A lot of these new speak out phones have GPS installed, wouldn't that defeat the purpose for being tracked and monitored?

Well you don't go around advertising to people that you know ( wife , girlfriend , friends ) that you have that phone and what the number is . Only use it for the hobby and nothing else .Period . No personal calls outside of the hobby are to be made on that phone , ever .

Can't trace a phone which no one knows that it exists .

Like someone already said , turn off the GPS if you're that worried .

yes
get a prepaid SIM and slap it into your phone when needed. Very easy to keep the SIM out of sight.

Why are you worried about tracking? who would keep tabs on you anyways? I understand if you want to keep your hobby life separate from your private life and you need a hobby phone for that.
I think in Canada, the cops have better things to do and track criminals that are a threat to society not hobbyist.
If you are at the airport on an international flight, you can get a pay as you go number from one of the vending machines.

Thanks for suggesting the 7-11 Speak Out phone. It was a simple process to purchase the phone, setup the account and phone number. I like that the minutes last up to 365 days. I bought the cheapest flip phone on sale and I'm surprised with its various features. The only minor issue is that the phone's area code is not a regular GTA number. This raised a red flag when I contacted a SP who thought I was using an internet phone. I was able to explain the difference.

What about apps like Text Me! or Viber? I've used Text Me--it provides you with a phone number. Then I delete the app when I'm done. I'm not totally sure if somehow it is linked in your phone's real number though.
