Hydro Rates Going Up this Summer, Ontario Energy Board says

This makes my head explode. They preach energy conservation. Do your laundry off peak hours. Run your dishwasher off peak hours. Turn your thermostat down. Turn your lights off when not in use. Replace standard bulbs with CFLs. Use motion-detector lights for all your outdoor lighting. Buy appliances that are ENERGY STAR®-qualified and the list goes on and on...

So what do we get for conserving energy? Higher Hydro rates yet again.

OEB says milder winter is to blame for rate hikes, which will add about $3 to average monthly bill.

Hydro rates are going up this summer, the Ontario Energy Board announced Thursday, a move that will add about $3 a month to the average household bill.

Time-of-use electricity rates have to go up because Ontarians used less power than expected during the milder winter, the OEB said.

The total monthly bill will rise 2.5 per cent for households that consume 750 kilowatt hours per month, the agency said.

- Time-of-use prices will got up a half cent to 18 cents per kilowatt hour for the peak period, which runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

- The off-peak rate, which is in effect between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. and all day on weekends and holidays, is going up to 8.7 cents a kwh.

The changes go into effect on May 1.

"Ontarians consumed less electricity than expected over the recent milder winter," said a statement from the OEB.

"As a result of lower usage, Regulated Price Plan (RPP) prices did not recover the full cost of serving RPP customers. One of the main reasons prices are increasing in May is to recover this shortfall."

Time-of-use prices vary based on when electricity is used during the day. They encourage consumers to use power when electricity market prices are lower.

The OEB reviews electricity prices twice each year based on updated cost forecasts, and prices are designed to recover the actual cost of electricity over the forecast period.

Now before anyone calls me an idiot, I do realize individual home owner's Hydro bills will be lower if they conserve. But as a whole, what a way to be rewarded for conservation.

here and there
And let's not forget the "Global adjustment" charge which is basically the difference between the high cost and what they can get for it on the open market. What an efficiently run group.

Of course they charge more. It's a sham. And all PR.

People use a lot of energy = "We have to charge more in order to keep the machines running and discourage energy wasters by penalizing them"

People use less energy = "We have to charge more so we can bridge the gap and ensure we hit our revenue target. It's not about penalizing energy savers. It affects everyone. What we don't tell you is that despite all the environment PR, we are just as revenue oriented as Walmart, but keep that on the down low"........

........."Oh shit. Ignore the last part of our statement. We forgot to edit that part out"

The Liberal government has really fucked up since McGinty got on the renewable resources bandwagon. We have expensive and inefficient windmills, solar energy that works sporadically and high associated costs. Gas plants to replace coal plants at a premium. All this with the half the turbines in Niagara Falls shut down in favour of renewables. What a muck-up with no end in sight. Protect us from the stupid and liberal.

And it's not going away. Today we started another solar project.

Pure fucking stupidity. PV solar at our latitude and with the amount of cloud overcast we have. I did some calculations for hot water solar and $10,000 of vacuum tubes would only produce the equivalent of $300 of hot water in an entire year.... IF you could harvest every bit of energy from it. That means that you had a use or means to store all the boiling water it produced during the longest, sunniest summer days (using $0.10 kw/h electric heat)

Photovoltaic cells are far less efficient collectors of energy than hot water solar.

But is feels so good to be green doesn't it!

Water usage down raise the water rates ..........same thing conservation doesn't pay for the little guy

Same thing with cable TV. Skinny package get less pay more for internet

At least with water rates you know where the costs are coming from. The greater the urban sprawl the higher the cost of service and treatment. Ontario needs to build two more sewage treatment plants pronto. And you can't run turbines with dirty water, the Americans need to do more to clean up the Niagara River.

With electricity the mess was started by Mike Harris when he attempted to deregulate energy production without investing in infrastructure. But his folly is insignificant compared to the boondoggle the Ontario Liberals have created. As currently structured, electricity producers have a license to steal. If they get re-elected, we are masochists, deserving of what we get.

I usually take a ride on The Maid of the Mist when I'm at the Falls. No so much for enjoyment but to see the water quality for myself. It's absolutely disgusting!

Ontarians Hit With Another Unaffordable Hydro Increase
April 15, 2016
QUEEN’S PARK – On May 1st, the people of Ontario will find yet another increase on their monthly hydro bill, with rates expected to rise $37.56 annually.

“Electricity rates in the province are skyrocketing and it’s only getting worse,” said Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown. “Since November, bills have gone up $186.96 a year for the average consumer. These rates are excessive for the average Ontarian.”

Ontario has the fastest rising hydro rates of any province or state in North America.

This is the latest unaffordable hydro increase for Ontarians, who were faced with another Ontario Energy Board (OEB) rate increase in November 2015. On January 1st, the Wynne Liberal Government also terminated the Clean Energy Benefit, representing a 10 per cent reduction in electricity charges, and the Ontario Electricity Support Program came into effect creating an additional cost for Ontarians.

“There’s a reason the Liberals don’t want to talk about hydro rates,” added Patrick Brown. “The legacy of the Wynne Liberals 13 years in government will be unaffordable energy rates in the province. What this government should be doing to help fight electricity price increases is to stop wasting money.”

While many Ontarians struggle to pay their hydro bills, the OEB claims rates are rising in part due to lower than expected usage over the winter.

“Of course the Wynne Liberals would blame rate increases on the weather. Of course they ignore the fact that the province produces enough surplus power that we could power the province of Nova Scotia for five years,” Brown stated. “What’s more, this government just signed another 5 wind generator contracts, for which we pay nearly double Quebec’s average. This is the reason we have higher rates in the province, and it’s why companies see our rates as a barrier to doing business.”

Schlong, so it's not worth it to invest in photovoltaic cells for the cottage then? (Rather than leaving baseboard heaters on low, it might be wise to invest in propane/gas tanks and forced air heat). Thanks for your post.

Actually it was Mike Harris who decided to restructure our electricity system along the lines of Enron....
The only politician that did what he campaigned and promised. I loved Harris (and the Common Sense Revolution).
