On the road with Willy
There are certain movies that I play in the house while I'm cleaning etc.
They're like good friends. I live alone and they provide background.
I don't actually sit down and watch but I will stop every once in a while for a favorite scene.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World.
The Odd Couple
The two Grumpy movies.
Bullit, the chase scene is a must. If I could have my time back from watching that I'm sure I'd be 3 months younger.
Smokey and the Bandit
Dirty Marry, Crazy Larry
Vanishing Point
The Great Escape
Kelly's Heros

can you explain how Ramius expected to get away with stealing the sub after he told Moscow what his intent was ?

Having a pretend nuclear accident then offloading the crew onto an American warship then pretending to scuttle the sub would have worked but not after he told Moscow

He got away with it by amazing luck that he could not have anticipated
You do realise this movie is not a documentary ?

According to the book, he wanted to rub salt into the wound and figured since he was in a sub that was invisible to current technology - he didn't think he would get caught (plus - his commanders knew they couldn't go back).

It was Jack Ryan that came up with the plan after the Russian's came up with the renegade sub story. All the Russian crew witness the battle and death of the sub - even if the senior Russians suspected - how could they prove anything ?

The idea came from a actual renegade officer that hoped to start a revolution

have I got this right ?

1 Ramius tells the Kremlin he is going to attack America so now they think he has gone mad

2 Ramius really plans a pretend nuclear accident near an American warship then pretend to scuttle the sub after evacuating the crew to the American warship

3 the crew goes back to Russia and tells the Kremlin the sub was scuttled

4 Ramius is now free to defect

Weakness in the plot

1 He could have lied to his co-conspirators about telling the Kremlin and they would have been just as motivated

2 now he risks American attack as well as Russian as he should assume the Kremlin will seek Americas help in destroying the sub

3 if he did not tell the Kremlin there was no danger of the sub being attacked - all he would have to do is the pretend nuclear accident near an American warship then pretend to scuttle

The plot needs to have no glaring weakness as Ramius is a genius and I fail to see how telling the Kremlin makes his plan more ingenious, all it does is make his plan more risky

This one is so messed up, but yet so interesting the way the director messes with your pyschy, especially the editing and cinematography...because its so original, there is always something new to get out of it, what a piece of work...if you want to be totally fckd up with nestalgia watch this one, especially when high...probably Oliver's Stones greatest direction written by Quentin Tarantino....its like you don't want to watch it because it is so wrong it is so messed up on so many levels, but then you do watch it to see if you can resist the mind fak...then you watch it again..

The idea came from a actual renegade officer that hoped to start a revolution

What my research came up with: The Hunt for Red October is a 1984 novel by American author Tom Clancy. It was inspired by two real events: (1) the deviation of a Soviet Navy submarine to Gotland in 1961 by Captain Jonas Pleskys (a Lithuanian), and (2) a 1975 mutiny aboard the Soviet frigate Storozhevoy, which was an attempt to defect to Gotland by Captain Valery Sablin.

have I got this right ? Tom Clancy's book is an amazing read - I highly recommend it. Like Godfather and other movies based on books - much of the detail is dropped from the book to the movie.

1 Ramius tells the Kremlin he is going to attack America so now they think he has gone mad No, he tells them that he is going to deliver the submarine to the Americans. In the movie, when the Russians realise they cannot stop the Red October, rather than have the ship fall into American hands - they come up with a story that Ramius is a renegade who will try to nuke the USA. This will enlist the help of the USA and ensure that any contact attempt by Ramius will result in the USA blowing the ship out of the water.

2 Ramius really plans a pretend nuclear accident near an American warship then pretend to scuttle the sub after evacuating the crew to the American warship [That was the book's version. The crew never knew about a battle.]

3 the crew goes back to Russia and tells the Kremlin the sub was scuttled. In the book, an old submarine is blown up and the only thing that is salvaged is a guage taken from the Red October which has the serial number on it.

4 Ramius is now free to defect

Weakness in the plot

1 He could have lied to his co-conspirators about telling the Kremlin and they would have been just as motivated. Could be a character trait to be honest with his men.

2 now he risks American attack as well as Russian as he should assume the Kremlin will seek Americas help in destroying the sub I don't think he foresaw the Americans hunting him.

3 if he did not tell the Kremlin there was no danger of the sub being attacked - all he would have to do is the pretend nuclear accident near an American warship then pretend to scuttle

The plot needs to have no glaring weakness as Ramius is a genius and I fail to see how telling the Kremlin makes his plan more ingenious, all it does is make his plan more risky In the book you learn that Ramius's wife died because of incompetence and as the doctor was related high official and was not punished. The hatred of the system was documented so it was not a huge leap to think that he would tweak the leadership having the confidence they could do nothing about it.
Response in bold above.

OK, so Ramius had a character flaw which was revenge for his wifes death

Because of this flaw he was blinded and did not forsee the Kremlin engaging the Americans in the hunt

Ok, but fuck me, Did he really think if he told the Kremlin he is going to defect the Kremlin will believe he scuttled the sub after his fake nuclear accident? The Kremlin would have figured out the accident was faked! Do you think the Kremlin would believe he scuttled the sub to keep it out of the hands of America after he told the Kremlin he was defecting ?!

This totally retarded plan may be explained by Ramius having a mental breakdown but you still have to explain the rationale of his co-conspirators to follow him so WTF did he tell his co-conspirators the plan was? and after he revealed he had told Moscow why was there not a mutiny against a plan that had no chance of success?

My personal top ten list....

Raiders of the Lost Ark..... saw it three times during its original theatrical release and umpteen times since on tv and video.
Grease..... I know this movie word for word and never tire of it.
My Man Godfrey.... classic black and white movie. Watch the original with William Powell, not the remake with David Niven
King of Kings ... underappreciated biblical film with Jeffrey Hunter(original captain of the Enterprise) as Jesus Christ. A must see for me every Easter.
A Fine Mess ... pretty stupid movie but I am a huge Howie Mandel and Ted Danson fan and they are both in it.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.. Steve Martin at his best and funniest.
Star Wars... nothing beats the original. Saw it at the drive-in in 1977 and have never tired of it.
Once Upon a Time in America... great gangster flick with DeNiro and James Woods leading the pack. Long but superb.
Beverly Hills Cop.... first R-rated film I legally went to see in theatre.
Night Shift .... The Fonz as a morgue worker-turned-pimp. I loved this as a teenager and still get a kick out of seeing a yong Michael Keaton shine.

Movie's that I've loved since childhood:

A Shot In The Dark
Godzilla vs King Kong
The Guns of Navaronne
Jason and the Argonauts

These days Rudyard Kipling is seen as a jingoistic racist, but it doesn't matter when this film is on tv:
