In Romania there is enough hard physical lavor to go around, they can not understand why anyone would pay to exercise or buy equipment for the purpose of exercising.

The Union Jack is actually three flags superimposed on each other. The fat red cross is the flag of St George, patron saint of England. The white diagonal cross is the flag of St Andrew, patron saint of Scotland. The skinny white diagonal cross must represent Wales but I don't know the patron saint.

As I learned it in the Boy Scouts (age 11) the history is:

In 1606, the flag of England (St Georges's cross - red upright cross on white background) was combined with the flag of Scotland (St Andrew's cross - white diagonal cross on blue background), to form the first Union Flag, marking the union of England and Scotland.

In 1801, the Irish flag (St Patrick's cross - red diagonal cross on white background) was added, to mark the further union with Ireland.

This latter flag was called the Union Jack.

By the way, the red diagonal cross is not symmetrical. The broad part of the white cross should be at the top, on the pole-side of the flag. broad white at the bottom on the loose side.

Flying the Union Jack upside down (as in your picture) is a distress signal, or can be a mark of deliberate disrespect.

I learned that in the Boy Scouts, too. I knew it would come in useful.
