I hate scams.

Recently a friend was on the internet on their smart phone, and a message popped up that she was the subject of a child porn investigation, and she needed to pay x dollars through a phone number. She never looks at child porn!

She called me in a panic, I told her it is a scam and definitely don't pay. Problem is, every time she opened the browser, this message took over the phone.

Ended up, I had to force the browser to stop.....it was the only way to get control of the internet app back.

Yes, I got a voice mail from both Officer Parker and Officer Roy Page.

First off, CRA contacts are not officers who can arrest you.

I called back and left a threatening message but it will only generate another automated call to you. You're best to just ignore.

I feel sorry for elderly people with no support who might be intimidated.

(My mom once got a live person calling from CRA about some issue. When I called them and they mentioned fraud, I exploded that THAT was nonsense, and they hung up after I demanded where they were calling from.)

I got this call last week. They left a message on my voicemail, so the beginning was cut off, but it was still pretty obvious to me that it was a scam.
Last week they actually showed up at someone's house and threatened them: http://www.thestar.com/news/crime/2...ers-pose-as-cops-show-up-at-markham-home.html
They arrested someone for this the other day: http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/201...canada-revenue-agency-impersonation-scam.html

I got hit with a real reassessment from the CRA last year. They just sent me a bill in the mail in the usual CRA envelope and on the usual CRA paper, 8 months after I filed my taxes.

I called Microsoft (nice guy in the Philippines picked up). Lots of scams out there. Usually, the scammers ask you to call a toll free number to unlock your computer. Run this number by the real Microsoft and it is almost 100% sure to be bogus.

Also, beware of emails that claim to be from your bank. Do not click on the link. If you do click on the link, do not answer any of the questions.

Why pick up the telephone anyway? If it's important they'll get to you. People should understand nothing important is done over the phone like transferring important information. Even when my credit card company calls from a seperate number I tell them to write me an email on my online account or to call from their number shown on the card. Sadly most people dot understand regardless IF it is CRA, police, the bank they will write you a letter and always ask for you to come in and send in a cheque to their registered address.

How do people pay the scammers?

How can a scam like operate so successfully? Isn't there a simple money trail that authorities can follow?

This particular scam has been getting people to pay via Western Union or prepaid visa cards, which should be a huge red flag, apart from the stupid threats which CRA never makes. There may be a money trail via Western Union, but it usually leads to another country & I'm sure it's not a huge priority for their police services.

I haven't done it yet but I've been saving the guys number for 8 months, I'm gonna call from a pay phone, play along, tell him I'm having trouble hearing him, tell him put the phone off speaker, then blow an air horn or whistle, I'll be wearing ear muffs.

When they phone, it should come up as Canada Revenue Agency on the phone. They will never contact you through e-mail. It will all be very official papers in the mail and if anything doesn't seem right, call them and ask them. I've even gone in person to the office on Front Street when I had questions.

It is a generic (VOIP) number so no caller ID
The scammers do have one of the call back numbers in Charlottetown so might help fool older people
Esp when they start threatening to "freeze your bank accounts" or "charge you criminally for fraud"

Yes, I got one like that yesterday. He angrily shouted, "Call back immediately. If you do not call back...Good luck" click. No officer would ever leave a message like that.

I just got a call from Officer Parker. I told him "yeah, everyone else in Toronto is getting calls from you and the cops know what you're doing. Don't call here again. "

He said "Thank you" and hung up. What a joke.

So far it's been Officer Parker and Officer James Morrison, both with an Indian accent. The voice sounded the same.

I just got another call and he was yelling at me to contact my attorney. Now this is harassment. I told him that I am calling the police and he just keeps calling.

It is a 647 number which the CRA would definitely not be calling from. Am I allowed to post the number here?
