Best Red Wine under $30

I have to admit , I was one of those people that believed expensive is wine, is the good wine. But after trying a french brand that was under $15. I was proven wrong. Does anyone know a good red wine. Drier the better, aged is good too. White wine, I have yet to taste one that doesn't make queasy..

Often you can find good Aussie reds for well under $30...hardy, wolf blass, and so forth all make very good and affordable cabernet savignons and shiraz'...(sorry gotta put a plug in for the home team) ...if you wanna go real cheap and still get a likable red...think chilean reds. BTW Jessica - holy crap that new picture is wonderful!! I mean...I can almost feel you through that imagine. My goodness, you are one lovely lady. You too Autumn - so very lovely!

But Australian wine is an aquired taste. Its very distinctive to me at least.

You can find a lot of good vino in the vintage section for under $30. It all depends what you like.

Funny as a semi-aussie I've been described the same way lol....

Yes Autumn - Aussie wines have been described at "big" wines...probably cuz we like to eat a lot of meat and cheese stuff so the wine has to stand up to it. And in fact if your self-esteem is not low you can get some great box wine (invented in Oz, thank you very much) that is high quality, keeps better in the box than even a screw top (aussie wines are all screw top now as the industry discovered corks caused them to lose around 10% of their product) and ends up being super cheap (like getting 4 bottles for the price of 3). May not impress on a first date, thus not recommended but great for a party w friends who trust you.

Go to an LCBO that has a large tasting counter. There you can sample a variety of wines for a small fee before you buy. There's a new Vintages release every two weeks and there's always something new to try. My average price point for a bottle of red is $20. If I find one I like I'll buy a case or two because once it's gone, they may never get it back.

If you're looking for an inexpensive red, try the Spinelli Cab/Malbec from Italy at $8.20. But here's the trick. Since it needs to open up, open it, pour a glass, replace the cap then let it sit until the next evening. It's actually much better the next day.

Often the best wine is not the most expensive. One of the worlds best wines chosen last year in a wine tasting completion was Australian. The guy that snuck it in disguised as a French wine is banned from his wine tasting club for life. It is what you like, not what other people like. There is no correct way to drink wine, Scotch or Cognac. Most Cognac is shipped and sold outside France, they prefer Scotch. Only 10% of Cognac is sold in France, when French people drink lower priced brandy, they often mix with fruit juice and a slice of lemon.

Here are two suggestions. * As previously mentioned in another thread. Not 100% wine products, but the ladies are impressed every time.

Reynac - Pineau Des Charentes - sweet aperitif wine made with eau de vie

Cognac is a product that is regulated by a cartel in the Cognac region of France. Each Cognac producer is limited to a specified production each year. When that production limit is reached all Cognac production stops for that year. The remaining eau de vie is used to make other products like Pineau Des Charentes. This product is a sweet aperitif with a cognac theme.

For a white perhaps a Sauvignon Blanc. This type of wine has a very grapefruit taste to it and is excellent in the summer.

And a great place for that...(regrettably but honestly) are the New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs - surprisingly fruity for being a dry wine. i have purchases the oyster bay for $18 in an LCBO in canada and just wonderful. There are other NZ sauv blanc's you get get too that are also quite nice and even cheaper. Those are my go-to's on that...chardonnay Australia all the way, but california has great ones too. But remember I am biased in favour of Aussie wines (the fine fighting wines, if you know your Monty Python).

This wine is from Piemonte region of Italy, where the Barolo wines come from. In fact, this wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes, just like Barolo, the wine of kings and the king of wines (at least from Italy). I had a bottle of this stuff last weekend, and it fully developed after letting it breathe for about half an hour. It worked very well with the grilled steak I cooked.

Alternatively, you could also try a San Pio Valpolicella Ripasso at only $18.00 a bottle. Very nice, almost like a full-fledged Amarone.

McWilliams Cabernet Sauvignon. $15 a bottle in the LCBO. Best value for the money. And I'm a bit of a wine snob.

How come that the same bottle of wine that costs $20-$30 here costs only 2 or 3 euros in Europe ?

2) import costs
3) taxes
4) marketing
5) LCBO taxes
