50 Percent Of NASA's Latest Class Of Astronauts Is Female

January 15, 2016| by Robin Andrews

In the 1960s, NASA sent a rejection letter to a hopeful astronaut simply because she was female. At the time, there was no impetus to set up a training program for women. How times have changed: The latest class of NASA astronauts is comprised of 50 percent women for the first time in history, as reported by The New York Times.

The latest people training to be astronauts for NASA were recruited in 2013. All of them are potential candidates for human missions to Mars, something NASA announced they were aiming to achieve by the end of the 2030s. Of course, female astronauts aren’t new: Helen Sharman, Sally Ride, and Valentina Tereshkova have all already shown that being an astronaut isn’t dependent on gender.

Mars is the prime target for the space agency for a plethora of reasons. According to The New York Times, Dr. Jessica Meir, one of the candidates that may be setting foot on the Martian soil, notes that “Mars can teach us so much about the past, present, and future of our own planet.”

Earning her Ph.D. in marine biology studying emperor penguins in Antarctica, Meir comments that she has always been used to remote spaces, and space itself certainly won’t buck that trend. Christina Hammock Koch also spent a long time in the South Pole, helping to maintain the telescopes there. Nicole Aunapu Mann had a very different past life: She flew fighter jets with the Marine Corps over Iraq.

In order to be selected for the astronaut program, Meir and her colleagues had to stand out from a**pool of over 6,000 initial candidates. They endured two years of training flying T-38 supersonic jets, learning how to perform complex tasks underwater, and regularly flying on the “vomit comet,” a plane journey that simulates zero-gravity environments by intentionally and periodically diving towards the Earth.

Unsurprisingly, the most difficult part of any mission to Mars will likely be the long time they will be separated from loved ones. At its closest, the Red Planet is 56 million kilometers (35 million miles) away, meaning that with current technology, it’ll take nine months to get there. The return journey, plus a month or so they would spend on the Martian surface, means that they could be away for at least a year and a half.

Astronaut Anne McClain, however, clearly believes the perspective you get from space is worth the emotional strain. “From space, you can’t see borders. What you see is this lonely planet,” she told Glamour magazine. “Here we all are on it, so angry at one another. I wish more people could step back and see how small Earth is**and how reliant we are on one another.”

WHy would NASA send a marine biologist to Mars? Wouldn't a geologist or seismologist make much more sense? There's no marine life there. But there's lots of rocks and regolith.

Maybe a marine biologist knows what to look for in terms of fossilized life or other parallel related skills. Or maybe George Constanza just has a lot of money saved up to hitch a ride.

As long as that wasn't a result of a quota, than that's great!
Exactly.

Man/woman, black/white..... quotas are dumb.

What ever happened to companies hiring people based on fulfilling the core requirements of the job?....

- Good job skills (technical)
- Good people skills
- Fulfilling required education minimum
- The candidate's salary/wages wanted fits the company budget

Is it that hard to hire someone based on that?

Anyon can be trained as long as they have the intelligence and mindset. And honestly on a mission like this they may want live food. Fish may be an option.

why is twizz ignoring Musim males printing and giving away misogynist books to the public for free. these books advocate wife beating, domestic voilence, and sex slavery and the subjigation of non-believers. an islam booth and yonge and dundas sqaure is giving out these books. feminist cowards like twizz are scared of real misogynists. they only go after soft targets like me

Free Islamic book at Dundas explains the “legitimate sources of slaves” according to Islam

The Walk in Islamic Info Center (WIIC), a Toronto-based organization dedicated to Dawah (propagating Islam) activity, has an Islamic booth at Dundas Square in downtown Toronto. Last year activists at the Islamic booth distributed for free the book “Human Rights in Islam and Common Misconceptions.”
The book stipulates “two exceptions as legitimate sources of slaves,” which are “war captives, or prisoners of lawfully declared wars by a Muslim ruler” and “an inherited slave born from two slave parents.” Other sections of the book sanction crucifixion, chopping off thieves’ limbs, stoning adulterers to death, imposing the Jizyah tax on non-Muslim residents and launching to jihad to spread the message of Islam.

Where the hell are fish going to live on Mars? They'd do better with a greenhouse to grow veggies. Botanists are more useful that biologists on Mars. Unless you propose building a massive aquarium once they arrive? No wonder it costs billions.

I think the reason they are getting alot of female applicants is due to their ad campaign...."Successful female applicants will be guaranteed an ass that's out of this world !!!"..What woman could refuse that?

[gross generalizations ahead]
For a lot of reasons, women make better astronauts than men.
a) smaller size is a bonus on a cramped space vehicle
b) smaller size = less oxygen and water requirements.
c) most psychologists would agree that women suffer less from cabin fever and close physical contact that a long (2 year?) space voyage requires.
d) there are possible cancer benefits, as well, but i can't remember the specifics

at any rate, what the hell is Canada Man talking about?

Because 50% is a suspicious number.
50% of the strippers being female at Club Atlantis, that would be suspicious. Even if this was a occupation that was more physically demanding, I would give that to you, but not in the sciences.

Along with fewer instances of sexual aggression and wanting to fight another astronaut or rape them if they are a man. Imagine how scary it would be to be the only woman, or one of 2 woman with a bunch of men, on space missions for years at a time, with no sense of law or protection from any kind of altercations. Perhaps it's not something that men frequently think about, but many of us ladies do worry when you are a woman and a minority around men for a long time you can have issues like this because of human desires.

If missions become 50% men and 50% women there is less chance of men fighting over women or wanting to assault them together, and more chance of 2 parties deciding to be intimate together willingly.
I'm pretty sure that men with such leanings would be weeded out during training and screening. After a while it would be simple to see which men and women don't play well with others. NASA has been at this for a long time.

I suspect NASA will consider intimacy among the
space crew to be unprofessional conduct. Zero-gravity
sex experiment like this is not on NASA's agenda.

but why is it when there is a diverse make-up some people automatically assume it's because of a quota, but when it's majority of white males that it's because they are qualified?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEagBK4Xb1w
That's because the majority of Canada is white. In big metro hubs like Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, there's a big mix of different backgrounds, but Euro-centric Caucasian people still are probably half.

Drive an hr outside from any key city and it's almost all white people. If I drove an hr up the 400 to Barrie, I wouldn't be surprised if it was 90%+ white.

Some people living in the GTA think Canada is 35 million people where it's all nicely proportioned across different ethnicities, across all cities and provinces since the media portrays Canada as one big happy family, but the melting pot is really only a handful of cities.

Wtf does this have to do with NASA?
