This is humiliating for Obama, he's having the State of the Union tonight. I'm sure he's going to tell how well he did with Iran....

Washington (CNN)Ten American sailors are in Iranian custody after two small U.S. naval craft apparently briefly entered Iranian territorial waters, a U.S. senior defense official said Tuesday.

The official, however, expects the situation to be resolved quickly.

A senior administration official told CNN that the U.S. lost contact with the two ships, which were en route from Kuwait to Bahrain. US saying its nothing , Iran gloating on their media.

Its a hostile act, if the 2 US boats drifted into Iranian waters the right thing was for the Iranians to radio them and warn them. Not take them prisoners and sequester the ships.
Two days ago they also fired a rocket near a US aircraft carrier. If it was mechanical problem, one could have towed the other.

Not that it is surprising but Iranian state media are saying something completely different from the White House Press Office

Iranians are saying that the US boats were snooping and heavenly armed...
Before the age of the drones, I could believe intensional incursions but drones are available so unless they are testing the defensive response times for a pending invasion (unlikely) - I figure it's an unintentional event.

This is what happens when the petty dictatorships no longer fear you.

Really? History lesson for you: Iran sacked the US embassy and took hostages. The US response? Negotiations where the US promised not to interfere in Iranian affairs. Then Iran took more hostages, this time through its forces in Lebanon. The result? Reagan secretly sold them arms in violation of an arms embargo in order to secure their release.

And you think they ever feared the US? Obama has been tougher on Iran than his predecessors. He does that talk softly, big stick thing pretty well, where Republicans have just opened their checkbooks to buy off Iran.

They didn't fuck with Obama because they knew the result would be sanctions rather than payoffs.

Unlike Russia, the U.S. is constrained by what actions it is legally allowed to take. One Russian was kidnapped in Lebanon and the Russians took quick and appropriate action. That is how you end hostage taking.

Sky,
I recall that the Russians dispatched the kidnappers and their confederates in a mostly grisly, bloody and prolonged fashion just to leave a most pronounced message. No one could do it as well as the Russians during the Cold War, not even the Mafia.

Really, the Republican solution was the Iran/Contra scheme which involved selling weapons to Iran and funding the Contras.

That was legal?

Are you suggesting Obama should have traded more TOW and HAWK missiles to Iran to get the hostages back?

If the boats were in Iranian waters then they had a right to seize them.
Fuji is right, Iran doesn't fear anyone. The Mullahs are crazy. They are happy to die in the name of Allah. Of course Obama didn't help the situation giving them $150 billion with no strings attached. Weak kneed leadership yet again.

Of course, it was illegal. As I said before, the laws (written by liberal lefties) makes anything the U.S. do illegal. Russia has no such constraints.

Even President Carter's failed rescue attempt was probably illegal too.
