London, Ont. police lay charge of "advertising another person's sexuaL services"

Police in London, Ont., shut down high-end escort agency. Charges include advertising by others:
"Among the charges issued against the suspects are three counts of “advertising another person’s sexual services” — the first to be laid in Canada under the country’s new and controversial prostitution laws. The new laws criminalize advertising and purchasing sex, but decriminalize its sale." (London Free Press)

I is legal to advertise your own sexual services, I think, but not someone else's

this will be in court for quite a while

I wonder why they decided to press charges

maybe the firm refused to donate to the police widows fund

The unusual situation of having the RCMP involved in this case & the Human Traficking charge leads me to believe there is a lot to this situation the cops do not want to reveal yet plus they set up a victims hotline.

Like I said, this isn't just an example of LE busting some random agency because of C-36.

London has very anti-prostitution group that has lobbied the police hard.

Under the Protection of Communities & Exploited Persons Act (C-36) it is illegal just to carry a sex worker's ad - even if they are putting it out themselves.
Newspapers and websites can be charged. That hasn't happened yet, but it can.

I am not surprised....lived in London for some time....

Very conservative town.
What exactly does being a "very" conservative town have to do with busting people for human trafficking?

London has 3 tory MPs
Well lets hope Liberal will do something, but they have bigger fish to fry now. It would be great if the stronger ladies got ahold of the MPs in Toronto to try and make some changes to the Bill. As Us men cant do a thing.
EXAMPLE: I still agree with only part of the bill for pimps who traffic underage girls, but as far as mature ladies, they should be able to advertise, and work as they please and their clients as well not fear being arrested.
This entire Bill C-36 was a BIG F----- UP. And way I see it, Peter MACKAY basically slapped the judge's faces from the Supreme court ruling. He did nothing to protect ladies, In fact make things worse.

Everyone - should contact their MP and pressure them to oppose C-36 (PCEPA) now!
There are far more service users than service providers.
The London Abused Woman's Centre (LAWC) is the core of the anti-prostitution lobby and funds receivers (conflict of interest much?)
They met with Mackay and testified in favour of C-36. They are tight with police.
Also this case was really NOT about trafficking. Don't be surprised if that charge falls away. They lead with that head-line to distract from discrimination of not allowing the sextrade to advertise.
Were at the point that trafficking basically can mean transporting the willing adult for a sexual transaction.

Yeah, no.

Two Liberals & one N.D.P.
London-Middlesex, which is mostly not London, but rural areas to the outside of the city, stayed CONservative.

Uh, trafficking is generally forced on women, slavery etc. I highly doubt this is the case here. I didn't read anything in the original post that mentions trafficking.
Whether this is a simple case of LE exercising the powers of C-36 to bust a regular type agency who's not involved in forcing workers to do anything against their will, or there was some concern as to the well being of the girls has yet to be seen. This report however seems to suggest human trafficking was involved. But what do I know...

Hamad Anwar, 26, and Tiffany Harvey, 24, are charged with three counts each of benefiting from sexual services, possessing proceeds of crime, three counts each of advertising another person for sexual services, two counts of trafficking, two counts of procuring or exercising control and one count of trafficking a person over 18.

This is an attempt to prove C36 is needed because the abolitionists and the PC base is in fear of the Liberal stripping this useless bill and flushing it down the proverbial toilet. Trafficking has now become the buzz word for any arrest involving the sex trade.

With that analogy LE would be busting anyone they can for a small amounts of weed before the Libs legalize it. Any cases of LE exercising C-36 and busting agencies in TO? Because if they can do it in London, it should be like shooting fish in a barrel in TO.

So you got any proof? I look forward to your examples, but I'm guessing you'll come up short. I suspect just like small amounts of weed, LE will turn a blind eye as long as children aren't involved and women aren't being exploited.

Police operate on complaints. Obviously someone did in this case. Just like in Markham. It was probably the hotel owners who spoke with the cops to arrange the sting.

But you are correct the busts will be used if there are ever hearings. And with the trafficking and underage angle wanna bet Justin balks at any legalization?

I agree there is too much political trouble to change the legislation & majority of Joe average guys in the population don't give a shit about it & almost all women think it is great. But because of the law creating an environment of illegality the Hotels are worried about their rep & my friend at Hotel security says they are stepping up their efforts to erraditate such business going on.

Trafficking has now become the buzz word for any arrest involving the sex trade.
It supplants the term PIMPING.

So everytime you see the word "trafficking" just replace it with the old buzzword "pimping".

There...feel better now?
