For many years the Philippines have been plagued by Muslim radicals. They're called Abu Sayaf. They have a long history of terrorism, also known as Moros.

Terrorists release video demanding $100M to free hostage group that includes two Canadians

Abu Sayyaf gunmen released a video Tuesday threatening to kill four hostages, including two Canadians, kidnapped in the southern Philippines six weeks ago unless it received a ransom of more than $100-million.

The 90-second clip obtained by the SITE Intelligence Group showed black-clad men standing over Canadians John Ridsdel and Robert Hall, as well Hall’s Filipino girlfriend Marites Flor and Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad.

“We’re being ransomed for each for one billion pesos,” Ridsdel said as a man held a machete above his neck. “I appeal to the Canadian Prime Minister and the people of Canada, please pay this ransom as soon as possible or our lives are in great danger.”

Hall made a similar plea to the camera. “I’m a Canadian citizen. I’m being held hostage by Abu Sayyaf for 1-billion pesos,” he said. “These people are serious and very treacherous. Take them seriously. Help us, get us out of here.”

The video ended after a masked gunman standing behind the Canadians said that if the demands were not met, “they will be killed by Abu Sayyaf.” The nine captors then chanted. The flag of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant was displayed in the background.

Young Trudeau said that saying there are terrorists in the world who want to hurt Canadians is fearmongering. The fear is that he might actually pay the ransom.

So much for his belief that Canadians wont be terrorist targets.

To be fair what they are doing is more criminal than terrorism, if it was terrorism they would have just killed the canadians in some gruesome fashion, they are after tangible things like money.

They are seeking to fund terrorism. That makes it a terrorist act as greed is not the motivating factor.

I am not sure about that, throughout history most wars and acts of violence are due to tangible things such as land and money even though the actual motivations are dressed up in a more noble facade.

Perhaps. Ultimately the goal is power. It's the tactics used to achieve it that define how we label it. And kidnapping innocents to be used as pawns definitely falls under the classic definition of terrorism.

If the government pays it will create a precedent for future kidnapings for ransom. Send the troops and shoot the hell out of them.
I think that is time that Canda forms a highly trained military gropu to deal with this tipe of terrorist. Go in, try to do a rescue and kill everybody else.

Trudeau is in charge now. We will be sending them coats and blankets and maybe even counselors to see when and why they feel isolated and abandoned. Poor terrorists, they're so misunderstood.

They do. The JTF2. They are the new Airbourne, that was disbanded after The Somali shit. And they are considered, while small, to be as good as the Seals, SAS or what ever other outfit you would care to compare them too.

The issue isn't that. It's equipment to get them there, and the political will to do it.

I don't think that many Canadians would complain if we spent 10 billions to Fully arm them. And fuck the politics, who mess with Canadian citizens you pay the price. No matter what country you are in

Justin Trudeau called it fear mongering when former Prime Minister Stephen Harper warned Canadians about the dangers posed by Islamic extremists.

Let's hope our new Prime Minister speaks out against the barbaric cultural practice of stoning women to death.

Are you kidding me?

All terrorists who seek ransoms are to finance their way of life and terrorism.

It's unfortunate that JT has no idea about how the world works. His inexperience and lack of foreign policy will shine brightly on many global issues...
