Anybody here spend much time in the basement? Are you concerned radon gas might be killing you? Or, is this just another urban myth?

I had mine tested before I bought the house and it way way below the limit...I think it depends on what area you live and the ground conditions. During my inspection before getting the house, I had all these tests done that were available and paid like approx $1,200. Everything came back clean.

These are my results for radon:

PRO-LAB HAS COMPLETED YOUR RADON ANALYSIS.

YOUR AVERAGE RADON LEVEL IS: 46 Bq/m3

Here are the thresholds:
Radon Threshold Limits?
Organization Becquerel per cubic meter Picocuries per litre
World Health Organization 100 Bq/m³ 2.7 pCi/L
Environmental Protection Agency (USA) 150 Bq/m³ 4.0 pCi/L
Health Canada 200 Bq/m³ 5.4 pCi/L

Thanks. I was watching CP 24 (Anne Rohmer show) last night and they said 850 people die from Radon gas every year in Ontario (more than killed in fires).

At what thresholds??? How do they know its radon and not something else like bacon or DATY?

It just seems like a money grab IMMHHO

Except that they neglected to mention that the trace amounts of uranium in the concrete of house foundations also generates radon. When I was working in the nuclear industry, I recall that there was a study about 20 years ago on the radon levels in houses in southern Italy, from the uranium in the concrete of the walls and such. There is a lot of work published around the world about radon in buildings. This is one reason why newer houses (from circa 20 years ago) have basement vents open to the outside. The newer houses in Ontario and elsewhere are more air-tight that were the older buildings.

This might save a bit on the heating and A/C costs but is not healthy. A house needs to "breathe". (Also, one should walk around naked when feasible because the body also needs to "breathe". Be sure to tell all your female neighbors.)

I agree with you. A house needs to breathe to bring in fresh air, to replenish oxygen, among other things. Many have recommended that windows be opened, even during winter months, to bring fresh air into a house.

The real danger is if your home is built over granitic rocks which are often rich in uranium (like the granites between Peterborough and Bancroft) or if the concrete in your basement used granitic aggregate. The danger in Toronto is relatively low.

Radon isn't toxic but can cause lung cancer. Proper ventilation of the basement can mitigate the danger.

Radon Gas has been tested in the U.S for the last 20 years and has just recently become an issue in Canada. Why?
