Had to look at this play after Peter King of Sports Illustrated called it the most stupid play in the history of the NFL in an article yesterday.
Okay, he really said the most stupid play in the last 6 decades; but, close enough.

The player taking the snap from centre sure looks vulnerable and exposed.
Colts coach said he didn't do a good enough job showing the players how to execute the play properly in practice.

officially there was a penalty on the offense(illegal formation) so the play doesnt actually exist/take place
doesnt count as the worst play in NFL history

It doesnt exist if the Defence accepts the penalty...the result of the play is erased....and the down is repeated...therefore...a non existent play...
but since it was 4th down and the offence did not advance the ball for a first down then the defence declines the penalty and accepts the result of the 'PLAY"...therefore it is a play...so..
yeah it was the STUPIDEST PLAY in the last 60+ years..

This was certainly one of the dumbest plays I have ever seen, but there is one other NFL play that I consider a bit worse.

I was watching this game.
Giant Stadium, Nov 19 1978 ... All Pisarcik had to do was run out the clock by taking a knee three times and NY would have won.

The last Seahawk play in the last Superbowl.
The Colts play was far worse than the Seahawks goal line throw. The Seahawks pass play at least had a chance of working and winning the game...if they make that call a hundred times it likely only gets picked off once or twice in the hundred tries, they just had the bad fortune of Browner not getting pushed back to form the pick and Butler using that lane to jump and attack the ball. I would agree that Lynch would have been a better call but it was not the worst of all time. The Colts fake punt was probably the worst play of all time because beyond the stupidity of the whole thing, when it was snapped it had zero chance of working. One would have to assume the idea was to confuse the defense and hope they all followed the Colt players and forgot the ball...but when the Pats had so many guys near the two guys over the ball it is unbelievable that they actually snapped the ball to run the 'fake' that was clearly not fooling the defense. Watching all of the New England defenders swarm the ball was too funny and is so bad it holds up to repeat viewing...you will be seeing that play on reels for years.
