Looks like they will attempt to reinvent themselves as Maxim Magazine.

Playboy has been increasingly insipid, even as a publication exhibiting nude glamour photography. The centrefolds 30 years ago were more provocative and showed more pussy than the current last few years. I signed up for a free "teaser" membership to the online magazine about 7 years ago and found it simply not exciting or interesting. I could find more pussy and better looking girls by looking at the (then pre C-36) escort ads.

Gone are the Playmate centerfolds. Have to subcribe online to playboy.com to see all the cyber girls nude.

Playboy has been irrelevant for decades. Once the web was born, all similar magazines were basically dead.

They use to have celebrity nudes that were worthwhile reading.

Query: Where will Lindsay Lohan (remember her?) get her million dollar paydays now?

Wtf...then what the hell is the point of Playboy then?!? I know they've had problems with sales due to the availability of nude photos online for free, etc. But I honestly can't see this as being something that'd improve Playboy's situation.

I only read it for the articles anyway.

Although tame by to-day's standards, Playboy was the trailblazer. They were my introduction to female nudie pics. Guys, do you remember when men's magazine had to cover nipples and pubes?

They will try another content model and another til they get it right. They aren't going to go bankrupt anytime soon. I'd hate to see them go down since they were trailblazers, particularly in the fight against feminazis who wanted them to bow to that agenda in the 80' & 90's.

Hef is a pretty great dude, I'd love to meet him someday and thank him for helping me get through high school lol

pretty sure playboy has a large cash reserve so that it has room to experiment. dont think playboy is going bankrupt any time soon. tho i heard a couple years ago that playboy was bankrupt.

playboy's success was because it was the first magazine to introduce nude centerfolds. being the first magazine to introduce and do this and keep doing this for decades when other magazines were hesitant follow suit allowed playboy to enjoy the cash flow for many years.but now that naked centerfolds are everywhere and there's too much competition. dont think playboy is going to be around for that much longer. hef should just retire the magazine and call it a day.

i remember being a little kid and going straight to the magazine racks to see the playboys that were at the top shelf.but we werent allowed to touch ha ha

Larry Flynt, although forced into some similar business conundrums with Hustler due to online nudity/sex, must still be laughing at this. He always did mock Playboy's approach.

"Playboy -- for all your lifestyle/humour/social/political, but not nudity, needs"

Playboy was great when I was 12. Penthouse was even better.

But the internet......thank Christ it didn't exist when I was a kid orelse I would have never have gone outside. With literally millions of women posing nude on line, why would one buy Playboy for the women?

I believe Hefner was working at Esquire (a men's magazine with no nudes) and then quit to start Playboy. The nudes made the difference then. To his credit, he added very good articles and book summaries among the girl next door type nudes. Instead of skutty nudes by pseudo photographers - he used famous nude photographers with carefully groomed models. Full genital photography came as a response to their first serious competitor (IMO) Penthouse.

There has been a snobby attitude in Playboy that seem to hold on to the 1960's generation -probably Hef's influence. I moved to Maxim sometime ago because they better articles and because of the no -nudity - more of the celebrities you would like to see volunteered to pose. If I want to see nudes - there is always the internet. I personally have no inclination to return to Playboy. I think it's a dinosaur whose time has come.

That said - I should make sure my pin-up collection doesn't get tossed - if it hasn't been already. Soon I could take them to one of those travelling televised antique shows ! :D

The other thing is is that Hefner definitely has a "type" of woman that he would put in Playboy.

Agreed. When I was 14 I once rubbed it out about 5 times in half an hour to Madonna's _Like A Virgin_ music video (watch, stroke, rewind, watch...). I'm sure if I watched it now I'd laugh, but teenage me really enjoyed watching her wriggle around in the front of that gondola.

Kids these days don't know how lucky they have it.
