It depends on the degree of compulsion, I guess. If a woman hates the very idea of prostitution, but forces herself to do it to feed her kids, that is very sad for everyone involved. Once communism collapsed that total control was gone and we did see an explosion of the sex trade in the post-Communist era.

I would imagine a lot of ladies worked informally for access to better housing, better stores, gifts etc. Especially with party officials. And more than a few had kept women.

Anytime there is men with money and power there are young women in the background. The rules may be different but the needs of both sides of the transaction doesn't change.

I don't know of any studies, but I've seen the activity often enough. It was mostly centered around international hotels, etc. Not much different from what we have here, really. It was almost never spoken of and, like poverty, it never existed. Officially. The powers that be harrased the ladies, periodically, but since everyone was on the take, the more successful ladies simply purchased immunity. Besides, showing good times to Libyans or Palestinians required blond, infidel whores. And cases of Johnny Walker.

+1 ... Been there, beautiful country, wonderful people, but a cash culture does not work forever. You've got to pay fair taxes to make a country work. Greece has maxed out it's credit card.
