Don't "chat" on the internet. (try telling that to a teenager when MSN was popular)
I was allowed to go alone to a park/see friends that probably lived a good km away when I was 7 years old, but god forbid I go on that U turn two street down.
Not by my parents but in elementary school, about 1/3rd of the playground was grass...we weren't allowed to go on the grass, but it was fine during winter. (I still haven't figure that one)
I had a teacher in high school that you were only allowed to go to the bathroom once per semester during her classes, if you needed to go more than once you go a written words sent to your parents (we only had 5 minutes break between classes, it was utter bullshit)
I must be very lucky, there is nothing they imposed that I think was stupid. They always gave me lots of freedom and I so didn't want to disappoint them I generally behaved.
Same here. I actually didn't really have any 'rules'. I was pretty much raised by my grandparents and I was a good kid so they gave me a lot of freedom. I rode my bike a lot and came home when the streetlights came on - remember that? LOL
The flip of that is the younger sibling gets less recognition for his achievements because he's not the one who blazed the trail. So a bit of a trade-off there!
I remember my mom set bedtimes by age so that I went to bed an hour before my older brother. He and my mom would watch tv for the hour. Of course, I never went to sleep before he did, as every night I'd sneak out and watch the tv from behind the coach. Such an ineffectual rule.
Also, I couldn't do a lot of things without my brother supervising...which I'm sure was just as annoying for him as it was for me.
Looking back as an only child, now with an only child of my own...nothing, they were all pretty sensible... I enjoyed massive freedoms with clearly defined quite liberal boundaries...
The best life lesson they gave me though was try anything once, then decide if you like it.
You're too young to have sex. After my mom figured out there was something going on with the new girl on the block when I was 12 years old. She ended up ditching me for an older guy and married him. She looks like Cindy Crawford in the infamous Pepsi Commercial now.
