Dude - The phrase was first used in the 50s when television westerns were popular and cowboy ranches popped up for city dwellers to experience the cowboy lifestyle. The city dwellers that visited the ranch dressed in new western style clothing to fit the scene were called dudes referring to duds ( clothing ) that they were wearing.
